Baseball Rarities Recent Acquisitions

100) MEL OTT Government postcard signed boldly in fountain pen. Postmarked on reverse Sept 6th, 1944. A beauty ! if this Ott does not qualify as a "10" I don't know what does. Unique in that based on the postmark Ott and the Giants had just returned to New York and the Polo Grounds from playing a double header against the Phillies. On September 7th Ott would hit his last home run of the 1944 season number 489 on his way to a lifetime 511 career home runs. A Six time home run leader , and twelve time all star. He played for the Giants 1926-1947 and was also their manager 1942-48. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951 he died in 1958. $650.00
101) ROGER MARIS Glossy photo Measures 3 1/2 x 5 1/2. Signed boldly in blue sharpie. Maris is pictured hitting his historic record breaking 61st home run. Won the "Most Valuable Player" Award twice he is best remembered for his 1961 season in which he broke Babe Ruth's long standing single season home run record. Died-1985. $650.00
102) BILL McKECHNIE 4 1/2 X 6 Autograph album page with large fountain pen signature. A magazine photo of McKechnie has been attached to the right of the signature. Presents well with excellent eye appeal. A player from 1907-1920. He is best remembered for his accomplishments as manager including a 1925 World Championship for the Pirates and another in 1940 for the Reds. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and died in 1965. $250.00
105) KEN BOYER 1950's original exhibit postcard with vintage ball point signature. 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 blank back exhibit pictured in Cardinals uniform and signed on the light portion. One of the best third basemen of his era which spanned 1955-69 for the Cardinals, Mets, White Sox and Dodgers he was an eleven time member of the All Star Team and 1964 Most Valuable Player. Very likely a future Hall of Famer he died in 1982. $150.00
106) BRANCH RICKEY 1946 LETTER TO DODGERS OWNER WALTER O'MALLEY Typewritten letter on Brooklyn Dodgers letterhead and measures 8 1/2 x 11. Dated Feb 16th 1946. Signed in fountain pen with his FIRST name only excellent baseball content in which he writes to O'Malley in part "I have recieved permission from the Boston Club to broadcast in Brooklyn Sunday games from Braves field provided you have approval of the league" he then goes on to write "You are up to date on the New York situation since you have had conversation with Stoneham. There is no reason for further delay in knowing what New York is going to do. I know that Stoneham was favorably inclined before he left New York. If the situation is such that it seems advisable I will call Stoneham on the phone" Rickey was a pioneer player, and executive. A unique letter written from one Hall of Famer to another. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967 two years after his death in 1965. $250.00
107) KARL SPOONER "Rowe" Postcard photo pictured in Brooklyn uniform. Nicely signed on the light area. A pitcher for the 1954 & 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers. He is generally considered to be the toughest autograph from the famous 1955 World Champion team. His where abouts remained a mystery after his playing career. He was discovered living in Vero Beach Florida in 1984 by collector Bill Zekus who had him sign about a dozen items which is where this postcard originates from. Spooner died shortly after at age 52 in 1984. $250.00
108) FRANK NAVIN Signature from a letter signed in fountain pen. Attached to a 3x5 index card. Detroit Tigers owner from 1908-1935. He had an eye for talent and signed Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Hughie Jennings among others. Has been given serious consideration for the Baseball Hall of Fame. A rare autograph he died in 1935. $250.00

110) TONY CONIGLIARO card measures 3 1/4 x 6. Original collector has stamped the date Feb 23rd, 1976 well below the signature a reference no doubt to when the autograph was obtained. Conigliaro was one of the most promising Boston Red Sox stars he played for the Sox from 1964-67, 1969-70 & 1975 and for the Angels in 1971. He led the league in home runs in 1965. A serious beaning effectively ended his career. In 1982 he suffered a heart attack and remained in a coma until his death in 1982. $150.00
