1952 Dixie Lids

I am curious as to why 1952 Dixie Lids are so Valuable and rarely seen.
For example, Nellie Fox. There are only 2 ever graded in the PSA Population Report. You just can't find them anywhere.

Why are they so scarce? and what is the value of one?
Could this possibly be the best collector's item out there of Nellie Fox?

I am not old enough to remember these as a kid but I am picturing kids buying ice cream. Unless I am bringing it home where I can wash the lid easily and save it what am I going to do? Lick the ice cream off the back of the lid and stick it in my pocket? No room. I have my pet toad in there. I am guessing most lids got thrown away immediately. Thus, they are somewhat scarce.

And if you could turn in 12 to get a photograph instead, you might have had a lot redeemed. Those that the company kept may have been thrown away.

You're right. They are lids to an ice cream that would get discarded. Ice cream is more important than the lid. So that makes sense on both levels that these were discarded after being eaten, and if you send in 12 lids, you receive a photograph.

Was 1952 the first years that Baseball players were on dixie lids? or is it just that the Nellie Fox lid is rare?

Baseball players were on Dixie Lids in '37, '38, '52, '53, & '54. Only the '52s seem to be rare. The '53s had the same promotion (send in 12 for a picture), but are more plentiful. And kids would be just as likely to throw away lids from '53 as '52...
