Anyone else into these? I've been trying to assemble a set for a very long time and I am down to the SPs now, with no luck at all at finding any of them. Anyone else trying this set? Anyone actually have any SPs? Any unopened game pieces [I seem to recall a bunch of them for sale about 20 years ago but nothing since]?

Since you got $2500 for Bill Freehan and Tommy Agee, there may not be any of them out there. Here is Lou Brock with both backs.

I know about them through my Clemente collection. I bought a couple of unopened ones in the last couple of years - opened 1 - Brooks Robinson and Vada Pinson I think - I lost track of where I put the other - for now. Any idea which back is tougher and why they created both?

I think both the rules back and baseball scene back are about the same I think based on looking for different Lou Brock backs.

As I recall, the unopened packs are game pieces consisting of two cards facing each other with a perforated border around them. They have the baseball scene on one outer side and the rules on the other outer side and open into the two cards. That is why the cards are often found with glue damage on a border or two, from the sealer spilling over from the pack edges into the cards. The pops of the art or rule backs should be roughly equal since one of each formed each 'pack.' The Special Gift Award card was redeemable for a booklet of statistics, so it is a short print as well.

Hey Adam,
It's funny that you bring this set up as I just picked up my first few of them and had a few questions about them. I wondered about which back type was tougher (that's been answered), I wondered about how tough the SPs really were (that's been answered) and I wondered how they were distributed/packaged (that's been answered). I've never seen the prize back so that's really cool to see for the first time. Thanks for posting this thread so I could learn a little more about this neat set. Best regards, AndyH .

Well, Andy, here's more info that may not be welcome. If you want to build a master set of the regular cards you will need four of each. There are two backs [rules and artwork] and also two fronts. The difference on the fronts is the player's name in gray or black. I can confirm that both fronts can be found with either back, so the master set on the regular prints is 160 cards [4 x 40 fronts]. I have no idea what the SPs look like since the Osteen is the only one I've ever seen. The two cards I've posted above show the front variation.

Adam,
Thanks for the good news about the variations with regards to the fronts. I hadn't even noticed the two different fonts. Good thing I planned to make this a long term journey with this set! Best AndyH

Adam,
With the checklist at 50 cards does that make 10 SPs then? Thanks AndyH

Technically 11; the Special Gift Award card shown above is also a SP that was redeemable for the booklet shown on it, but is is a quantum easier than the other ten; I've seen several over the years.

I never knew about the gray/black letters for the name....but after looking at some on ebay, it does appear some of the names are lighter in color.
Here is a lot on ebay which shows it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/26-CARD-LOT-...item3a7cd85d1a Now I have one more Lou Brock to find..... |

Somebody is selling one of these and advertising it as a '68 Atlantic Oil but I don't see Willie anywhere on the checklist. Any idea what this is?

Those are American Oil 1968, not Atlantic Oil.
Here is a checklist http://www.oldbaseball.com/MegaCheck...uble&year=1968 |
