Default Snype

Was anyone else bidding on any Snype auctions this evening?

Haven't even been able to confirm my email. Tried about 20 times, never worked.

Welp!

I guess that’s good news that they’re getting more attention than they expected?

Not sure why they didn’t feel the need to invest in enough bandwidth to actually be able to handle the traffic.

But this isn’t the first time this has happened to an AH.

I don’t think server and network capacity was the only issue.

“On Monday, as many of the first auctions were closing on his new site, Snype, the platform had massive technical glitches.

The main feature that allows a bidder to put in a “snype” — a pre-programmed last-second bid — instead triggered the auctions themselves to end, no matter how much time was left. For other auctions, the bidding features were completely disabled.

The site was taken down as the glitches were discovered, Probstein told cllct.

Probstein said he is also looking into the possibility that Snype was a target of a hacking scheme and is not sure of a timeline for its return.”

Hacking scheme?

Interesting take. I’m going to guess that no matter how much beta testing you perform, it’s always an adventure once you start live action.

Ok, now I’m getting e-mails from them. I’ve apparently won auctions, and getting payment confirmations as it looks like they’re automatically charging my card.

Small amounts as they were lowball bids I put in as placemarkers before they shut the auction down, but concerning nonetheless.

Same. I wasn’t charged though.

I’m not a super bidder, so I think they just charged me.

This looks really really really bad. Not only does it look like shill bidding likely occured, I'm concerned about identity theft and or stolen credit card information.

Why would ebay take him back? Not a good look. (OK I know why, but still)

Based on a few posts on Reddit by a consignor who corresponded with Rick - https://www.reddit.com/r/PokeInvesti..._site_by_rick/

Sounds like Rick is trying to finalize a new deal with eBay to get back on there ASAP. Told the consignor - "'we are in the middle of doing a deal with eBay we already have your items pictured and described so we can post to eBay fairly quickly with your permission please let me know if this works for you thanks, rick"

Not super surprising that he’s going back. But even for a jaded pessimist like me, the timing seems awfully zippy.

Default Other Issues

Maybe I wear a tin hat but what if they did not get enough bidders and they decide to cancel the auction outright, using technical difficulties as an out. Few people knew about their transition from Ebay. Prices were low in many cases. Consignors may have been up in arms. Just a theory.

I'm not buying into the narrative that the site was having tech difficulties and then everything just got accidentally exposed ... blah, blah, blah ... This was a hack, period.

This will soon blow over like every other alleged scandal. This industry is too big to normal levels.

Sadly you’re almost certainly right. Except all that shilling (shylling?) leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That's not really how any of it went down though.

The crash had nothing to do with the data being exposed, other than they were both related to letting AI write your code and not understanding the ramifications of that.

More importantly, even if it was a hack that revealed the shill bidding of the hunnybunny account, I'd say that was a good thing.

When his next auction posts, on whatever platform, no one will even remember or care. See concepts 1 and 2 in signature.

I wonder if eBay is seeing any of this and the shill bidding by Rick? Think that was the reason they booted PWCC, was it not. So I would think they would not let Rick return for the same reason.

I’m really disappointed in Probstein and the fact that I signed up and gave over a lot of information. I have since emailed them requesting a full deletion of my account.

I guess I am naive. I didn’t realize how rampant shill bidding was in the hobby. I thought this was mostly cleaned up and I know the auctions where it happens and I stay away from them as a result.

Shame on Probstein and shame on anyone who bids on their own items or hires/asks others to do so.

Now that PSA has proudly and emphatically declared they’re number one on eBay, and with their deeply entrenched relationship with them (the authenticity guarantee), could they influence Probstein’s return to the platform?

And this Snype debacle is getting so much traction online, it’s everywhere…possibly to a degree beyond any previous hobby controversy. Maybe so much so that some consequence is bound to be suffered by someone (other than card collectors) as a result. Who knows.
