Default 1994 Topps Pre-Production Send-Away Card

Hi -

Snagged this off eBay for a few bucks - anyone have any idea of its origins? It is too large to have been a pack insert.

It is blank-backed.

Could it have been a factory set insert late in 1993?

Thanks!

Here's what baseballcardpedia.com has to say. But they don't clarify if the redemption was in the factory sets or if the cards were in the sets and the redemption was for the hobby version.

1994 Topps pre-production cards were inserted into 1993 factory sets but what BBCP and TCDB don't address is that there are two different versions of the 1994 pre-production set (they note the Ryan only). So it is entirely possible that Topps sent the version not found in factory sets to collectors who mailed these redemptions in.

The 2011 Standard Catalog says a cello wrapped version was given to dealers and hobby press. A second version was included in 1993 Factory sets

Back of cello.

Up until 1994 I tried to collect anything listed for Topps in the Standard Catalog. I gave up in 1995 because of the proliferation of products and built in scarcity of some issues. Now just do the base and Heritage sets along with any updates to those

Thanks all for the information - I have both versions of the 1994 pre-production set. I keep both in my 1993 master set binder since they were issued with the 1993 factory set.

If I could learn which version was given to hobby press, I would move that to the 1994 master set album.

If one came in a factory set, and the other was given out by Topps, it still doesn't explain the red redemption certificate - if anyone knows anything, please pass it along!

Could it just be they are missing a step? Maybe Topps gave out these redemption cards that dealers and hobby press could send in to get the cello wrapped pack of them. The redemption does say it is for a 9 card pack.
