So last night an uncut strip of 10 1921 W9316's sold at Heritage, along with 2 1923 Fleer Backed W515-1's. A Miller Huggins SGC 3 and a Rabbit Maranville SGC 4. Definitely some rare Strip cards that didn't seem to sell that well. Given all the recent hype over a small pile of strip cards found recently I thought it might have drawn out some type collectors.
I won the Maranville and was Underbidder for the other 2 lots. I had family over so did not notice my alarms or outbid emails. So I was lucky to get one. Probably all I needed anyway. But a 23 Fleer HOF'er has been on my wantlist for more than a few decades happy to scratch it off. |

I had no idea Fleer went back that far, learned something new. Congrats.

Jonathan, I thought the two 1923 Fleers would go for more. If I didn't already have a type example (a common, Dutch Reuther), I would have gone hard after one of these.

Those are great cards. I like the early Fleer cards. Been looking for a Fleer Babe Ruth for years. Hopefully one comes available for me to purchase.

I made a video on the 1923 Fleer set a while back. It is actually part of a multi-subject set of 120 different sports and non-sports subjects.
If you are so inclined to watch it https://youtu.be/75QrIq4rI3U?si=87ONxgV52lAXbOQY

Val I hope your type is a Senator.. I saw the 4 or 5 Fleer examples that have popped up since these were discussed at legnth here in 2012 but didn't chase them. I appreciated them for their rarity but have held out for a Hall of Famer. Long wait and happy to have one in my collection.
I watched the Youtube video, I might have included more W515-1 information including a checklist but taking the time to spread vintage card knowledge is great. Thank you for that. It has been a strange year. I spent double my collecting budget. I had to sell a few items in order to accomplish this but I end the year with a slightly smaller more focused collection that I find myself spending time with. I hope everyone here at net54 has enjoyed our hobby this yearvas well. Merry Christmas... |
