Default Show us your favorite 2022 pickups!

Hey, it's almost the end of the year!
What were your favorite memorabilia pickups in 2022?

Here are my three favorites:

A super rare, fully-dated ticket to Vern Kennedy's no-hitter on 8/31/35 @ CWS

A 1972 NC Governors Award given to Boston Red Sox RHP and NC resident Ernie Shore for hurling a combined no-hitter with Babe Ruth in 1917.

Until 1991, when the rules were changed by MLB, this game was considered to be a Perfect Game.
This award came directly from the Ernie Shore family estate and I'm proud to own it! It hangs on the wall in my office.

A new pickup, that I have not previously shown on net54.
Here is a partially scored program to St. Louis Browns pitcher Bobo Holloman's no-hitter against the Philadelphia A's @ STL. on 5/6/53.
This game was only attended by a mere 2,473 fans and additionally it rained.
The program is signed by Bill Veeck on the score page.

For my collection, this scorebook is essential for a mini-collection that I own for Bobo Holloman, which has always been interesting to me.

He certainly gets my vote for being the most unlikely pitcher to hurl a no-hitter. He pitched his no-hitter in his first career start.
His no-hitter was NOT overpowering by any definition.
In fact, balls were hit hard all over the yard, but right at players.
He literally possessed nothing, if not extreme luck.
Holloman injured himself pitching for Santurce, PR just prior to him coming to STL.

After throwing his no-hitter in May, he was sent down to Toronto two months later with a grand total of 3 ML wins, never to return to the majors...

Happy holidays to everyone on net54!

Default 1st time an all minority lineup in MLB

September 1, 1971

25 years years earlier and they would not have been allowed on the field.

The occasion of the first all-Black lineup came without any warning. Pirates manager Danny Murtaugh posted the lineup, and may not have realized himself that he had started the game with all Black players. The players themselves did not realize until the game was underway. Al Oliver stated that he had not noticed the lineup until an inning or two into the game when Dave Cash came up to him and said, “Hey Scoop, we’ve got all brothers out there.”

Only 1 graded by PSA. This could be #2.

There is an exhibit on this game at the HOF & at PNC.

I have been blessed and have added a lot of amazing things this year. My favorite has to be this Wade Boggs bat. It came with all the PSA/DNA paperwork for the bat(game issued) and the autograph. A fellow member and great guy sent it to me for free. I was speechless when it just showed up and I opened the package. I have a fairly nice Boggs bat collection and this one fit in extremely well.

Nice ticket Paul. I saw that over at Boogers and was a great find. If you ever decide to sell or will list in an auction let me know. A few of the long-time season ticket holders have a version of this ticket but none of them are willing to sell it or any of their other memorabilia until they pass on. The Exhibit you mention is right next to Manny's restaurant at PNC. It looks like its a permanent exhibit as far as I can tell.

My current 2022 favorite...

1925-28 Hillerich & Bradsby Honus Wagner bat. 36", 40.4 oz. Would have been used either during his barnstorming time or while coaching. The bat does have inch marks on the knob which would typically indicate a store model bat. However, in the case of Wagner, it doesn't appear that there are any known store model 125 series bats in existence. I don't know whether any had ever been produced or not.

Regardless, the bat matches his specs for length & weight and appears to be the same model (based on knob shape and barrel end shape) as a 1925-28 coaches bat that sold through Heritage. The Heritage bat was also very nearly identical in length and weight as this bat). A playing days 125 would be both extremely rare and prohibitively expensive so this is a good filler for now. I call it "Wags" for short.

Edd Roush photo for my small but got growing 1919 Reds collection. And a Tris Speaker extra large photo I got from Lelands at the start of the year. Getting it framed is next on my list of things to do.

Hard to decide as I've picked up so many cool pins, tickets, cards, game used items, etc. this year but this is one of my top choices for sure.

I just wish I could find another example of it somewhere in the hobby but so far its a 1/1 at this point.

I had an extremely good year between work, selling most of my collection, and stocks. My "retirement car" came for sale after a short 3 years of looking...

Default Arod Game used Ball f7

I started collecting modern Game used because I felt that MLB Authentication was pretty solid. I have been an Arod Fan for many years and getting a game used ball that Alex hit was something I had been looking for. So when I saw this Ball that Alex hit off of Cole Hammells for his Home Run #548 at Tropicana field that had MLB Authentication I was stoked. Even more so since it arrived in my mailbox.

Wool warm-up suit worn by Ben Eastman silver medalist in the 400m at the 1932 Olympics. He is shown wearing it on one of the Reemstma 'cards'. This was given to me by his granddaughter

Studio portraits of William Wheatley member of the 1936 U.S. Olympic basketball team. Due to the rules only half the team played in each game. He played in the gold medal game and was the member of the team who mounted the podium to receive the gold medal and laurel wreath. These were part of a 10 pound box of papers sold by his son-in-law.

Jonathan:

ARod hit his HR off Jason Hammell NOT Cole Hamels. Note the spelling. Cole Hamels never pitched for the Rays and since the game was in Tropicana Field it had to be Jason Hammell who was with the Rays in 2008. See:
