AB
AVG HR RBI SB OPS 464 .196 21 69 2 .713 I know this isn’t pre-war specifically, but in a historical context: He batted .196 with 21 HRs?! Isn’t this the weirdest stat line you’ve ever seen??

Adam Dunn finished twenty first in MVP voting in 2010 (must have been a down year for the league) and was an All Star in 2012 (again, must have been a down year in the league) but look what he did in 2011.....

Check out Chris Davis' stats
53 Home Runs 1 year & a few years later the Orioles didn't want to play him even though he was costing the O's millions They ate $23 million per year in '21 & '22 https://www.baseball-reference.com/p...avisch02.shtml . . Last edited by Jay Wolt; 10-14-2022 at 08:50 PM. |

You beat me to it. I'll never not think immediately of Deer when I see a sub .220 BA with 20+ Homers. He was still a solid player due to all of the walks that he drew.

Kyle Schwarber is another HR-or-bust type of player. This year, he led the NL with 46 HRs and 200 Ks. His BA was .218.

I loved that 91 Tigers team. They had a beer-league softball foursome of Cecil fielder, Mickey Tettleton, Rob Deer, and Pete Incaviglia. Plus the trio of Whitaker, Fryman, and Phillips contributed a combined 60 HRs.
Here are some of the team's ranks that season (in the A.L.): Hits -- Second to Last HRs -- First SOs -- Last Walks -- First AVG -- Last Runs -- Second They ran out a similar team for another three years, but none quite as stark as the '91 team. In 1994, Joey "the Vulture" Boever averaged less than an inning per game appearance yet compiled a 9-2 record, tied for 8th in the MLB for win total, 3rd among pitchers with 75 innings or more in Win Percentage. |

I was at a yard sale today where there were a number of Mark McGwire items for sale, including an unopened box of Safeway Cereal. I've never had any interest either way in his career, but McGwire had a rather interesting final season:
Games 97 At Bats 364 Runs 48 Hits 56 2B 4 3B 0 HR 29 RBI 64 W 56 K 118 BA .187 OBP .316 SLG .492 OPS .808 I know that some will look at these statistics as being tainted, but just over 55% of his hits went for extra bases with 51% being home runs. His body had given out, but what an exit. Jack Suwinski of the Pirates hit .202 in 106 games with 19 homers and 38 RBIs. He had 30 RBIs on the homers, which means he had about 100 games worth of plate appearances in which he drove in eight runs.
What was even worse was that he hit .112 on the road and drove in seven runs, five on homers. Or how about this...all of his RBIs off of LH pitchers came on five homers. He had 106 other PAs against LHP in which he went 7-for-93 with 11 walks and no RBIs

One of my favorite weird stat lines is Roy Thomas. Thomas was a superstar at getting to 1B, but not to other bases. Even by deadball standards his are weird.
He hit .290, on base of .413, leading the league in walks almost every year he played a full season. Only once did he ever get even 20 extra base hits, even though he primarily played at the Baker Bowl. His on base was eighty points higher than his slugging. |

In 2019 Tim Anderson had a .335 batting average and a .357 OBP. Only 15 walks the whole year.
