I know we've had some spirited debates over the years about who should or should not be in the HOF, but seems to me Parker is a pretty bad oversight, no?
Admittedly I am no expert on many of the more recent statistical measures folks have come up with. Last edited by Snapolit1; 04-09-2022 at 01:35 PM. |

He's about as borderline as borderline can get. Defensive metrics don't help him at all.
Lack of walks also hurts a lot of his more analytical stat lines that contribute to his WAR and OPS+ rates. I do think if he had put up the same stats in the 60's-70's, instead of the 70's-80's......he'd probably be in by now. He's one of those guys like Cecil Cooper or Bill Madlock or Carney Lansford, that the term "professional hitter" was made for. |

Parker is close, a couple more good seasons and he'd be in. If I had a vote, I'd vote no.

Tim Raines eventually made it to the Hall so...

![]() Modern analytics loves Tim Raines. Not so much Parker. Raines has almost 30 more accumulated WAR then Parker, with an almost identical amount of games played. That's an entire other career for lots of very good ballplayers. |

I no longer have an idea what a hall of famer is. His WAR is very low....Harold Baines level. Traditional metrics (hits, homers, batting average, etc) are good. MVP and a couple of rings. There are a couple of players from the 1970s who's WAR is lower than I might expect...I wonder if it was an effect of the game and strategies of the day.

Parker is such a tough case for me as a Pirates fan, who didn't really catch his career with the team due to my age, but I saw him later in his career and knew about his impact with the Pirates back then, so I liked him. He had a Hall of Fame run in his peak 1974-80, but he has a lot of flaws that were hidden by highlights.
For a high average guy, his OBP is low. He ranks 970th all-time among guys with 3,000 plate appearances in OBP. Yet he's 404th in average. He gets credit for being a toolsy player due to his power, running and arm, yet he had a very poor success rate for stolen bases for someone who ran a lot and he committed a lot of errors. His defensive metrics are awful. He won three Gold Gloves, and one of those was a great choice, but the other two do not belong. He should have been a one-time Gold Glove winner (1977). He's not Derek Jeter bad, getting handed four of his five Gold Gloves as the worst player at his position, but it's close. His 40.1 WAR really shows his flaws hidden by the highlights. No one is pushing for Albert Belle to be in the Hall, yet he put up the exact same WAR in 60% of the time, which clearly makes him a much more valuable player than Parker. They aren't even comparable. Belle got hurt by his attitude with the media (and everyone else), but Parker wasn't squeaky clean obviously, anyone who knows about the 1985 Pirates knows about his side story. I voted no on him, but that's mostly because there are about 100 better candidates who are eligible right now, but I'm not against a large Hall of Fame. Someone like Parker should never be forgotten.

With Baines’ induction lowering the bar, a number of candidates suddenly seem viable.

If you make a list of players deserving to get into the Hall of Fame, there will be a lot of names before you get to Parker.
Some more obscure stats that point to Parker's limitations: He averaged only about 35 walks per season. His career on base percentage was a pedestrian .339. And he made 134 errors in right field, an amazingly high number. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk |

Just registered my vote, #120 "for" Dave Parker's inclusion (against 124 no's) in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Before voting, I did check Baseball-Reference.com and was reassured by the stats (2712 hits and .290 average over nearly 2 decades in the majors) that my recollection of his great throw from right field in the 1979 All-Star game was not the sole basis for my vote. Oh, yes, and his 9 times receiving MVP votes (resulting in one title, one second, two thirds, one 5th, etc.) and three Gold Gloves, three Silver Slugger Awards, two batting titles and multiple other league leader numbers were no mere afterthoughts. He wasn't Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb or the two dozen or so other automatic HOF'ers, but he was a great ballplayer and, I believe, the top 300-500 players (of more than 20,000 to play at the big league level) ought to be so honored.
