Default As I See It...

...There are 2 kinds of people who post here on net54:

Investment brokers

Card collectors/hobbyists

Why not break the forum out that way? Create a forum called "Card Investments and Card Grading In General".

If that were done, I promise I would never again attempt to hijack threads or post obnoxious comments!

How much is that card worth and what has been your ROI so far? I mean that asset, not that card.

There are those that create click bait subject lines on purpose.

At any rate, I think I’m solidly in the collector camp since I know the random things I want and tend to overpay (according to vcp) for them. Hopefully eventually they catch up to what I paid but don’t particularly care I suppose. If they crash, yeah I would not be happy.

Hi James

I have no issues with the way it is done now.

I am a collector/ hobbyist but I like to get all perspectives

If it was split into 2 forums I would just be viewing to forums/sections.

Just as I look at other sections of this forum although many I am not collecting items but it is a good way to learn, get different ideas and perspectives

So either way works for me

My guess is that the overwhelming majority of people here are someplace on the spectrum between pure collector and pure investor, not at either extreme. The same is likely true of any hobby where items have nontrivial value.

I agree...and for the record this forum, in this structure, is going on 13 yrs old. Like the old saying, if it isn't broke don't fix it.

On the flip side (see what I did there?) at least people are no longer complaining about the number of T206 threads...

I was never a good drug dealer when I was a kid, I consumed more product than I sold which made it an unprofitable enterprise, same with cards, I'm a collector trying to support my habit. The payoff is after I'm gone and my kids discover they have a valuable asset on their hands. In the meantime I have a lot of fun building my collection and supporting others on this sub with theirs.

Default As I See It....

There are many different kinds of people on Net54 who have a shared interest in sports and non-sports trading cards. What their motivations and intentions are, I don't really care. I've also never understood the "true collector vs investor" gatekeeping I see on here and other non-Net54 boards as well. It just reeks of one side or the other trying to feel more superior over something really, in the grand scheme of things, trivial. I've learned a ton on here, have seen some great cards that I'd either never seen before or even knew existed, and managed to do a handful of transactions (buying and selling) on the B/S/T. If I ever saw a thread and wasn't interested in it, I'd skip by it and move along to something more in tune to my interests.

I joined the board about 12.5 years ago now and never had any issue with it. Don't fix what isn't broke.

^^This...but also, I think a lot of members cross into both spectrums. For example..there are many on this thread even that huff and puff about being collectors,...but I see them posting for "graded only" on their WTB listings....for modern cards...which to me reeks of investing. I am not a collector that likes to slab per se....but I get it for pre-war or autos for authenticity reasons or for preservation...but when you start talking about graded cards in the last 30 years...it tips the scales to smell like investing to me...which is OK...just be honest with yourselves that there is probably a little investor in most of the collectors here. I am guilty of this to some point as well.

Another topic which I posted in as well kind of indicates this..the Topps purchase thread...I posted about the collecting aspect of it and how the purchase will affect that...and no responses...almost all posts are about the business side of why how when etc. Which I could care less about.....I just wanna know will they produce sets so I can continue my set run.
