Will a 1 of 1 do?
![]() This series of 10 cards was issued in a horizontal strip. It uses the same images as the ca. 1925 4-on-1 Exhibit cards with boxers and baseball players. The stock is much thinner than Exhibit stock. I have only seen the Cobb once: this one. Uncatalogued until I catalogued it. Here's the Al Simmons from the same strip issue: ![]()

Surprise, I may have the least desirable rarest card. My R308 Type 2 (large size) self-developing Tattoo Orbit of Pepper Martin is, as far as I know, one of a kind. The only other player I have ever seen for Type 2 is Jimmy Foxx.

I'll show this card since there are others from this set currently on the front page auction going on.
Edit: Actually, I stand corrected. Card is from a different set than the front page auction. Last edited by glchen; 12-15-2021 at 12:53 AM. |

I may be able to joust ya; on the, "least desirable"; lol. 'Wickey' McAvoy, an 18 yr-old catcher from Rochester, NY; after his team had a series with the Baltimores; is signed by Connie Mack's A's, as a back-up catcher. Subsequently is sent to Baltimore for seasoning. While there, McAvoy catches a young pitcher named Ruth; undoubtedly is reporting analysis of this young pitcher back to Philly. When Mack begins negotiations with Dunn of Baltimore, Mr. Mack feels $10K is a bit steep for his liking; prolly thinking negotiations will follow. The rest is history as Boston came a calling. My guess is that after the passing of Powers and ATC pulling his card from the 350 run; someone from the A's office acquired this card from the printer (nameplate removed, no shadow); inserted it into the ol' typewriter (anyone remember those? lol) and gave Wickey his own 'card'; this was a big deal to some back then, having your own baseball card. I am still digging on this backstory but wanted to share what I have. Ben (Lover of all baseball history backstory; especially when it involves cards!) Since a few collectors have previously posted Post-War items, I thought I'd post this fairly rare, desirable card of Pete Rose. But, Pete is not the reason for it being in my humble collection. I enjoy collecting unique '50s and '60s White Sox memorabilia; and this bad boy includes 3 Chisox Topps Rookie All-Star Team selections.

It's hilarious how the company must've thought, "Man, everyone uses the same darn picture of him holding the bat. Wait, I got it!! Have the art department leave his hands where they are, but airbrush out the bat and throw a mitt on his hand, so he looks like he's in the field. Oh, make him holding a ball, too. Problem solved!! It's just like having a different picture. Now, let's drink some scotch!!"

1968 Clemente test disc is the only 1 graded and the only 1 I have ever seen. The Wagner is 1 of 2 graded Marten's examples (I suppose more may exist raw).

I have quite a few Japanese cards that are unique or have known pops in the single digits, if you want to count those (a couple examples below). If not, PSA has graded only five copies of this type I Carey. (Type II much more common; I don't know how many SGC has graded.)

Some incredible cards on here. Cards I couldn't even dream of. Fantastic job, all around gentlemen, it's been a treat to read through this thread. In the spirit of sticking to the section, I have little to offer in terms of Pre-War. Post War would be my Berk Ross Mantle. Really have to start working on the Pre-War aspect of my collection!

Fascinating thread. That 1960 logo variation is an eye opener. Learn something everyday, or at least try to! I would imagine those Korean cards haunt many the player collector.
My rarest card (thanks to Joe T, who hunted this one down for me) is a signed 1952 Bowman Mantle. There are only 19 signed, as compared to 3400 graded unsigned in the PSA pop report. It is the second rarest of all signed basic issue Topps/Bowman Mantle cards, behind the 1952 Topps, of which there are 14 examples in the pop data. ![]() Last edited by MattyC; 12-16-2021 at 08:10 AM. |
