Any 'Lefty' Collectors Out There? Steve Carlton Autos...

I have a bunch of autographed Steve Carlton items available for trade/sale. Not being a philatelist, I'm not sure whether or not these are considered first day covers of some sort?? They are empty, originally unsealed (although I'd have to check if time has caused them to adhere any), smaller envelopes marking certain events in his career that are postmarked from multiple cities on pertinent dates, I assume? There is also a pretty cool solid silver coin commemorating his many Cy Young Awards. Have no idea if there is any value or significance here, but oh well. There are seven different ones (with one duplicate for a total of eight), and one has Phil Niekro's autograph on it as well (and is postmarked from Toronto, Canada).

Take a look, and if anyone is interested in them (plus I have additional 'Lefty' items in an album in my bucket) give me a shout. I generally look to trade for vintage cards I need/like, but I'm also looking to raise money, so offers are welcome. Pretty cool stuff for the Carlton collector that (I imagine??) you don't see every day...

Philatelists have a tough time categorizing these too. The closest is "event covers" which is a super broad category covering eveything from really neat stuff like these to homemade covers celebrating very obscure things.
Like "Eds hot dog stand first day of operation"

GS is Gateway, and Z is well... Z.

Both had some serious connections and an impressive network of people in every major league city. They would have envelopes and sometimes a stock of special stamps ready to go. When something like a 300th win or 3000th strikeout happened they'd connect with a post office insider if it was after hours, and get at least 500 envelopes cancelled and handed back.
It's not as easy as it sounds to get that done even during hours.*


The foil and silk were added later.

Cool stuff.

*I tried to do 20 for 9-9-99, and the po I went to refused to do handbacks. So I mailed them, and got three different cancels, a couple that didn't get in the machine until 9-10 and all of them got pretty beat up in the mail process since I hadn't added stiffeners.

I had this signed in the early to mid 90's at Peterson Air Force Base. He was very polite. Seemed weird to me he signed the baseball with his right hand and the autograph is so amazingly perfect. He was wearing a world series ring as well I believe.. cool ball

Thanks! and, no problem, I see it as sort of a responsibility where my different hobbies cross over.
It does get interesting when an oddball item needs to get put with the most appropriate category. The worst so far was one that was a passably interesting item in four different groups.

If it had been in BST, I'd be less comfortable about adding the info, so no problem here.

I was thinking you could vacation in the Chicago area this year. The National ends August 1 at The Rosemont and 11 days later the APS show moves in. I am debating on which show to attend. I will probably sell to clients at the food court during The National while I would just buy at the GASS. I enjoy digging through the miscellaneous boxes some dealers bring. The last time I went was Richmond a few years ago. Drove down from just south of D.C. and parked on the street for free. Very low key versus the National. I did finally get to see something I would have really wanted when I was giving lectures on and collecting Civil War items - a CSA Mesilla, NM cover.

That would be fun, but just not something I can do right now.
Both hobbies have gotten a bit pricy, and kids are both expensive and time consuming!

In stamps, I actually sort of focused on something for once. I collect the 1870's officials and their plate varieties. Used to be no competition, and barely any recognition from dealers, the perfect combination. But the last few years I haven't seen much on ebay that I needed that was also reasonably priced. And on the basic stamps I'm out of inexpensive ones I need... Probably time to look for another specialty.
