For anyone as obsessive about 1978 Topps as I was as a kid, you may enjoy my latest article just posted to the SABR blog.
https://sabrbaseballcards.blog/2019/...978-topps-set/ And if you want to skip the reading and simply do your own analysis of 1978 Topps Play Ball data, I've made the data set available to the public as well. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...9cU/edit#gid=0

I started collecting in 1978 as an eight year old. In fact I remember my first pack was a cello with Woddy Fryman of the Cubs as the top card. I grew up in Chicago and chose the pack for that reason. In that pack there was also a Pete Rose and Tom Seaver. Not a bad introduction to collecting. I never did the Play Ball game. I was too busy collecting (hoarding).

Love the read...great write up! I totally played that game at school with my buddies, and my childhood set showed the wear...haha. I have since replaced that set, wish I still had my pack set. Anyhow, I was 9 years old in 1979 and the local store was still selling 78's, so we had lots of them. At a year old they seemed ancient...lol.
I also love the picture of your red locker type boxes...I had those too! I had one for football (never really liked those), two for baseball, and one for my Star Wars cards. Those were huge at school too.. Again, thanks for the write up!!

Never owned or used one of the card lockers as a kid, but a friend kept all his cards in them. I own one now for nostalgia sake. I also played the game and remember memorizing certain player outcomes over time. I could be wrong after 40+ years, but my brain is telling me Warren Brusstar was a HR. I hated that card otherwise...
