What's the Most You Have Spent (or Would Spend) on One Card?
NOTE to Leon: Please delete if you feel that this isn't appropriate.
My personal limit is $6K, which I paid for a Goudey Ruth. After that purchase, I decided that would be the highest I'd go for any future purchases. .

I don't know why it would be an inappropriate question other than many folks won't want to say. I have paid over 20k a few times.

I've spent $17k (Lionel Carter's T206 Plank in Mastro 2007). I no longer have it. I was also outbid once on a signed T206 Cobb at $26,000.
I think you'd get more responses as a poll: $25k or higher $10-$25k $5-$10k $1k-$5k Under $1k

$185... for a highlander Cotton Cigarette back in poor condition. My one card that has a little worth is a 1903 E107 Breiach-Williams - Jimmy Williams. LOL, I paid $25.00 for it back in the late 70's ???

I actually just spent the most a few days ago! It was $1,675, although, I got $100 in eBay bucks, 5% back from ebates, used discounted eBay gift cards, so TECHNICALLY it wasn't that much 😊 It was on a 1983 Star Dominique Wilkins Autographed card graded gem mint.

$15,500 for a 1914 Cracker Jack Mathewson in last year's REA.
I bid $120,000 two weeks ago for that T206 Cobb/ Cobb back in Memory Lane. But I was absolutely certain that my bid would never hold up (and of course it didn't, the card went for $228K). |

It's an expensive hobby. Have gone into Five-Figure Land on more than one occasion.

No clue.
If you need to remember ... you shouldn't be spending it in the first place.

I don't think that I'd ever spend more than $500 on a card (it's just cardboard after all!). Usually I like the under $50 cards and I like the more obscure players.

Holy Grail
I have spent several thousand on different cards, but over the years my
collecting focus has gravitated toward early Red Sox material, particularly the 1912 team. With that said I imagine I would go as much as 5-10K for a Carl Horner "Smoky Joe" Wood. He has always been my favorite ball player since meeting him as a young Red Sox fan in the early 1980's and this is the Holy Grail on my want list! |

Depends on the card. I'd spend whatever I had to if the deal is right. I know I declined to spend $17k on a 1948 Leaf Graziano but that was also me not wanting to fly across the country to make the deal (crippling fear of flying at the time). Offer me one today at that price and I am booking a flight and arranging the cash at the other end.

Hi,
My family had friends in New Haven CT (we lived right down I-95 in NY) who knew Joe Wood. When they found out I was a Red Sox fan (in "enemy" territory) and was very much into the history of the team they arranged for us to meet him. He was in his 90's but still very much with it and very gracious and nice to an impressionable baseball fan and young pitcher. I find it amazing that I met and spoke with one of the great hurlers in history. Even the great Walter Johnson said,"...no man alive can throw any harder than Joe Wood." A couple of years later I also had the pleasure of seeing that same elderly gentleman honored at Fenway Park on Old Timer's Day. Over the years I've accumulated some nice Smoky Joe pieces including a circa 1912 charcoal and pencil portrait of Wood in his immortal season that is my favorite, but I wish I could have afforded his 1912 World Series pendant or engraved watch. $300 is the most I have ever spent on a single card in the UK. This was for a raw
Imperial Tobacco hockey card of Newsy Lalonde. I think it is a C56 it is #36 of 36. My estimate grade of this card would be psa 4.5 - purchased at our annual convention in 2016.

I bought both in 2003 Steve

We definitely have some heavy hitters on here. My high is $200 for a '58 Mantle.

$3,850 and I remember shaking when I saw my offer was accepted. If it weren't for PayPal Credit, I don't think I would ever make big purchases. Spreading the pain over six months makes it more palatable. That said, I don't think I will ever come near paying that much for a card again.

It was pertaining to why some companies don't advertise here. And I am sure some of the reason is they get no protections about members saying what they want to about their companies. But when I read that comment I just thought the guy was an idiot. Not a big deal.

I don't know what you charge, but it seems dumb to me for any major auction house not to advertise here and let people know when their auctions are running. I am always looking to buy or sell to improve my collection, but there are times auctions slip my notice. My avatar says i am in the last group and there are quite a few of us here willing to spend a lot on cards.

I have bought a few in the $500-$600 range but try my best to stay under $100 per card. I would much rather have 15 beaters that I paid $50-$100 each for than 1 card in much better condition that costs $1000.

For me the highest I`ve ever gone in 12+ years of collecting is 1500.00 dollars. Have promised myself, and so far so good, if ever to go higher will sell items to raise needed funds. Now if a Green Cobb, or an E 90-1 Cy Young suddenly appeared well...........................................

$
The most I have spent is somewhere a little shy of $700.
There are several cards I will need that are in the $10-20K range to complete sets, but at this point I can't stomach the opportunity cost. Everytime I consider it I remember that the same amount of money would build the poolhouse, finish off the upper garage, wallpaper the livingroom, etc. |

Me too when it comes to vintage baseball cards. Though I try to get nice looking lower grade cards.
