I'm working on a Bob Feller master set and since I'm not collecting one specific set I haven't put in a ton of time learning about all the different one. I need a R302-1 (1943) and R302-2 (1949) M.P.&Co. hand cut, but have no clue how to tell the difference. I asked around at a show recently with no concrete answer so the next place to go is the board.
Any help would be appreciated. Pictures showing the differences would be great. Thanks, Steven

When in doubt, always check Old Cardboard:
http://www.oldcardboard.com/r/r302/r...?cardsetID=857 Basically, the 1943 cards are unnumbered and the 1949 ones are numbered |

On players that aren't repeated between the two sets, the 1943 cards have a typeface that looks like handwriting inside the baseball on the front of the cards, where the player's name is. On the 1949 cards, that typeface looks like typewriter. With the others (Boudreau, Williams, Henrich, Feller, Reese, and DiMaggio), you'd have to rely on the biographical info on the back, or the card numbers.

As Al stated, with the cards that are seen in both years, you need to look for both a card number (a number present means a 1949 card; no number can be seen with BOTH 1943 and 1949 variations) AND the bio information. The paragraph start differs between years as well as the name/position header.
To make these cards an even more collecting nightmare, there are misspellings in some names, as well as ink color variations. As a Ted a Williams collector, attached are photos I have used to determine HOW MANY different variations of his cards are out there. Dave |

The 1949
Of note, only the 1943 cards that I have identified have the company tag line at the bottom. I am not sure if this is 100% consistent in the sets. Last edited by Harford20; 01-20-2015 at 06:11 PM. Reason: Add tag info |
