I'm having a hard time finding a vintage prewar baseball card in that auction. Is it hidden behind the baseball?

Definitely, NO
If you blow up the scan of the 'Letter of Authenticity' - you will find the following statement: The inscription was penned in an unknown hand.

Does, that mean the ball is authentic and the autograph is not?

I took that as the writing was done by an unknown person... but the signature itself was authentic?
