I believe we've covered this before. BUT I can't seem to find the thread for it. So I'm starting a fresh one. As a local guy(albeit one who doesn't really get out much), I just think it would be kinda nice for us local to share some local events so that the out of towners can have a better idea of other things to do in the area. Anyone who knows of any interesting types of event going on in the area during the National, feel free to post them here.
I'll start with The Capitol Theater. Located on the corner of Detroit Rd and W.65th, in the Gordon Arts District. Just a great old theater from the 1920's. I finally got there for the first time the other day for a midnight movie, and it was a pretty enjoyable time... Starting Fri, Aug 1st(for a week) they with be screening the 40th Anniversary restoration of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I believe there are going to be 2 screenings each day. I'm not 100% sure on the times, I don't think they've posted them yet... So for anyone interested, you'd just have to check the site... http://www.clevelandcinemas.com/comi...s.asp?id=13823 Now another one at the Cedar Lee Theater in Cleveland Heights. Another old theater from the '20s. Saturday Aug 2nd, there is a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. They do this the first Saturday of every month. http://www.clevelandcinemas.com/movi...ls.asp?id=3865 Again, anyone else with some events they'd like to share, please do so... |

After the suggestion from Tim Kindler, I'm looking forward to checking out the original house where the film "A Christmas Story" was filmed. Check out www.achristmasstoryhouse.com for more info. It doesn't look too far from the IX Center. My father-in-law is a big fan and will be getting a 'leg lamp' for Christmas this year. We'll probably check it out on Wednesday morning, before the show opens.

Looking around a bit more. Here's a couple more things...
Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls(maybe a half hour away), will have Rascal Flatts and Cheryl Crow on August 1st. It's a pretty cool outdoor venue... http://www.theblossommusiccenter.com/events/ The first round of The Bridgestone International starts that Thursday at the Firestone Country Club. Also about a half hourish outside of Downtown.. http://www.worldgolfchampionships.co...itational.html Bunch of different type things listed on this site... http://www.thisiscleveland.com/event...bmitBtn=Search I'd also recommend picking up a copy of the "Cleveland Scene" while in town. They're free, and all over the place. Can't name any specific places off the top of my head though. Usually good weekly reviews, articles and ads for restaurants and things going on during the week and beyond. Here's a link to their website... http://www.clevescene.com/ Last edited by novakjr; 07-20-2014 at 01:33 PM. |

We stopped in at the Christmas Story House back in February 2013 (my son was having testing done at the Cleveland Clinic) and the people couldn't have been nicer. It's a bit odd in that it is right in the middle of a neighborhood of houses packed tightly together. We went on a Friday morning right after a snowstorm and it was just the tour guide and us, so we had a really good time taking pictures (posing with the lamp, me on the couch, getting the bowling ball in the lap, etc...). The Cleveland Museum of Natural History was really interesting as well if you are bringing kids with you. best of luck! Steve

I went to the Blossom Music Center the last time the National was in Cleveland. Agree it was a really cool outdoor concert venue, much larger than I thought.

The Cleveland Museum of Art has one of the most amazing collections we've seen, and we've been to many if not most of
the great art galleries in the US and Canada. Something from every era and for every taste. http://www.clevelandart.org/ Our reactions to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame were, um, mixed... http://rockhall.com/ If you've got kids along with you, the Great Lakes Science Center [ http://www.greatscience.com/ ], right between the Rock & Roll Hall and Browns Stadium, will keep them happily occupied.

About a block from the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, there is a WW2 submarine on display. Worth going thru it. Have to admit I felt very claustrophobic while I was in there. You will need to climb down a narrow hatch to get in there.

Enjoyed the Geneva on the Lake tourist destination with the wife and baby after the show on Friday night. The "strip" is kind of like a mini-boardwalk similar to the Jersey shore........

When I had my band, we would play down there quite often. It's a cool little town. Used to be way better, but it's been gaining some momentum again lately.
