Is this a joke? The photographer's name is really "A. Stiff"?

It certainly looks like 1908 (or more precisely, '08) to me. No idea on the team. Given what looks to be a provincial setting, I would guess a town ball team or perhaps minor leaguer. Anything on the back of the photo?
(By the way, I also rotated the scan and re-attached it below, as it was making my neck a'stiff looking at it sideways.
