When I first got into prewar as a teen my first prewar card bought for me was a t206, but the first card I purchased was a 33 Goudey. I wanted to do the entire set eventually, but I am very slow and doubt I will get there because I enjoy just adding new sets. Also I have become less willing to pay more money for a certain card just because that player was considered good (most of my cards are "common" players).
If I ever do complete the set Lajoie will not be in it, since he doesn't have 33 Goudey card. He has 1934 Goudey card (based off the year on the card) that was made to fill a gap in the 33 set. |

I don't, but wouldn't mind getting my hands on a few of them. I love the Pepper Martin card.

i'm about 30 cards short of finishing my mid-grade set. most likely i'll get a lajoie RP and dirty it up to look like the rest. the ruths and gehrigs are tolerable, but $20k for a baseball card is a hard check to write.

I love the '33 set, but can't afford to start collecting it - I would want the ones that look like they were printed on higher-quality cardboard, as opposed to the brown ones that look like they are about to crumble.
I Only have two - Gehrig and yellow Ruth.

Ya, my budget is limited so I am sticking to presentable cards in the good range. I still love them. My Dad used to tell me stories about him buying these as a little kid. Too bad his Mom threw them away like so many other stories. I think that is where my love of these cards started.

Jim, I have discovered two nice size Goudey collections here in Kansas City. Both in fair to very good condition, but untouched since the 1930's. Most of the Big League Chewing Gum banners had been cut off. I have been told kids back then didn't want the advertisement on their cards.
![]() ![]() ![]() By the way, many of the cards were off centered. When I see someone comment that a Goudey looks trimmed based solely on uneven borders, I know they have never been involved in a Goudey find.

Interesting, I had never heard that. I have noticed quite a few trimmed cards on eBay where the big league chew banner has been cut off. I have to keep reminding myself that these cards were just cardboard back then and not big money like now.
On a separate note, do you know of any place to look up the history of 33 Lajoie sales? I know you are searching for one and I am curious if I'll ever be able to afford my dream card. Jim |

Cardtarget is pretty handy.. Especially for sets like '33 Goudey that has lots of sales. There's a few past Lajoie sales in here..
