just curious
Often after an Ebay no reserve auctions starts, someone will bid $0.99 Has anyone ever won an auction for $.99(assuming the card is worth much more)? |

Most of the time when I do that, the bid would be serving as a placeholder. I have never been that lucky to have the bid end at $0.99.

People bid on these in this manner mostly because their watch list is full and they still want to keep track of the auction. A few people also do this because they don't understand the ebay process and how everything works, so they think theres a small chance they'll get lucky and get if for that price. |

I used to place placeholder bids like that often in the early days of ebay. And yes, I won my share of auctions at that .99 starting price. Most often because the seller's listing was confusing, misleading, or listed in an "off" category or because there were no pictures. I have a very nice '51 Topps team card because of this and several t205s. I stopped doing this when a few people who knew my ebay id would watch what I was bidding just to see if they could score a bargain. When ebay went to mostly private bidder names, I started doing it more again. Most recently, I won a Globe card for the initial 9.99 price. About a third of what I thought it might go for.

I won one auction a few years back at .99, a pre-ww2 card worth about $8-10. The seller didn't return my multiple messages about my winning bid, and eventually I gave him a negative. Then he got back to me. Never got the card.
The moral of the story is always start your auctions at $1.00...no one ever does it, and you will do fine job messing up those $.99 placeholder bidders. Brian Last edited by brianp-beme; 02-09-2013 at 06:51 PM. Reason: grandma grammar |

One cent.
The seller thought I got a good deal. I wonder what his fee was. Yes, the card is graded BVG 7.5. Hope to sell it one day for a dime. ![]()
