Has anyone been able to find 3 versions of any player who doesn't have an A/B variation? I have been stuck on 2 different Rod Carews for quite some time and am wondering if anyone else has been able to track all 3 down for anybody.
A third version of the Carew should be missing a trademark symbol by the Twins logo I think. The top version is much harder to find than the bottom. ![]() I was able to find the third variation of Jim Palmer and Gaylord Perry on COMC both of which involve the team logo trademark symbol on the B version of an A/B variation, but I didn't see any other variations for any other players available. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It took me forever to find a 1979 Kellogg's Rick Reuschel with the registered trademark in Tony The Tiger's scarf (or collar, whatever it is), and even though it was still sealed in the original package from inside the cereal box the plastic surface had cracks. To me, 1970 to 1979 Kellogg's cards are the most frustrating thing to collect because they are prone to cracking over time, I have given up trying to replace them. You have the most difficult one, the one with the registered trademark in the scarf. The next time that you see a sealed 1979 Kellogg's Rod Carew it is guaranteed to be one without the registered trademark next to the Twins team emblem, and more than likely the one that you need with the registered trademark below Tony's scarf. The only 1979 Kellogg's that have the registered trademark next to the team are from the plentiful third printing factory sets. It gets confusing with some teams because they didn't have a registered trademark next to the team emblem on any of the printings, Phillies, Red Sox, Brewers, Astros, A's, Blue Jays, and a couple of Dodgers, Monday and Rau, didn't have a registered trademark at all near Tony The Tiger. The Carew that you need will look like the Zahn back, the registered trademark below Tony's scarf and no registered trademark next to the Twins emblem.

I've only seen a couple sealed ones, but they contained the Carew I already have. It would help immensely if all sellers scanned the back of the card, but I can understand why they wouldn't on these cards because they go for so little money. I actually cleaned out most of the Beckett Marketplace blindly about a year ago and got only the common version, so I've got more than 10 of that one. I have a couple on scarf versions; I got lucky that a couple got listed on ebay around the same time. If I could find the third '79 Kellogg's, a '77 Hostess #3, and the million or so Carousel back variations, I think I'd be about done with food issues for Carew.

I love the Kelloggs cards as well. I don't know if I have shared these as of yet. If I have forgive me. These are the die cut art proofs for a few of the 1980 set. The cards are to give you an idea of the scale. I have never seen any others for sale anywhere. Have you ever encountered similiar pieces?

I believe I saw you unleash those babies on another message board. I've never seen anything else like them, and I bet they would bring a decent pile of change. Thanks for sharing.

From above:
The Zaun is an A/B variation and the Cubs cards seemed to have changed logos between the 2nd and 3rd printings. I looked at Beckett again, and the 13 cards that supposedly have only two variations are from a certain group of teams that never include a symbol by the team logo. Taking the remaining 47 cards and removing the known A/B and logo variations (Beckett only mentions the Phillies not the Cubs) leaves the following 22 numbers (if I did my homework right): 2, 3, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 28, 29, 31, 32, 35, 36, 37, 40, 42, 44, 50, 52, 55, 58, 60. Because of what I have seen with the Carews, I would assume these 22 numbers do not have a 3rd version (below scarf and missing by logo). Has anyone found 3 versions of any of the listed numbers? |
