The Name Game

I have a few questions concerning the names of people/entities. Please help!

#1 Alot of old-time ballplayers were nicknamed "Rube". I know why they called guys "Lefty" or "3-Finger", but what's a rube?

#2 While walking the show floor at the National a few weeks ago I noticed the Huggins & Scott Auctions signage had pictures of the T206 Miller Huggins and Jim Scott. Were these two players or their families the ones that started the company?

#3 (A Very Important Question!) Where did the name "net54baseball" come from?

In addition, if anyone has other questions about names or an interesting "story" of how someone or something got it's name please feel free to share. Thanks!

I can answer this one since I sort of came up with it. When our board moved, in 2001, from the original Full Count Baseball chat board it went to a chat board that was from a hosting company called "Network54". It is the same one the guys on the non sports side still use. They use prehistoric software and eventually we out grew it, imo. When we went to our new software platform and our new hosting company I felt the name change to Net54baseball was appropriate and the best for the board. Many folks still call it "network54" which is incorrect but not the end of the world. regards

A "rube" is an unsophisticated country boy. A lot of ballplayers came from rural areas, and joined teams in major cities. Those players would sometimes end up with the "rube" nickname.

And when one of them was the best, hard throwing lefthander anyone had ever seen, every new left handed fasatball pitcher was also called "Rube."

For anyone who knows Bruce, what ever was the real reason for the continual use of the "we"? Other than the "class warfare," Bruce wrote very intelligent threads and has by all accounts a very nice collection. However, the "we" made this posts a parody, which he must've realized.

BTW, I read in an earlier thread that Bruce was very ill, so hopefully, he's getting better these days.
