Default Let Us See Some Christy Mathewson cards...

After reading a little bit about Christy Mathewson JR, my admiration for "Big Six" (Christy Mathewson Sr.) has grown. Both he and his wife did a splendid job raising a son into a man. Let us see some Christy Mathewson Sr. stuff in his honor.

Default Matty image

This is one of my favorite Mathewson images (Pastime Novelty postcard) depicting Matty pitching game two of the 1913 World Series at Shibe Park (not Shibo). Mathewson faced Plank that day and in the top of the 10th, after nine shut-out innings by both pitchers, Matty singled in the first run of the game and scored the second, earning a 3-0 victory. It would be New York's only win of the series. Three days later Plank avenged his loss by pitching a masterful two-hitter to win game five (3-1) and clinch the pennant (in New York) for the A's. Enjoy.

Cheers, Mike

Hey Phil,
Thanks for posting that Gazette Matty. I hadn't seen one since I got this card that is based on it. I know there is a Gazette Thorpe and Gazette Phili Team card like this composite looking W-unc too...

Fantastic pieces, everyone! It's always fun to browse
through one of these threads.

I'll offer up another T206 portrait, and an E92. I've
always liked Matty's T206 portrait, and how the fiery,
orangish-red background contrasted against his calm,
gentlemanly demeanor. It's one of the nicest looking
portraits in the entire set (perhaps only trumped by
the Johnson). I'm completely content with my low
grade example, as it's crease-free and presents well
for a VG card.

The classic horizontal pose found on the e92 (and
other E card sets) is one of the finest examples of
color lithography ever applied to a baseball card.

Default How could I forget

How could I forget one of my most favorite, and if I took a poll, it might be the board's favorite (of the few in my collection)...A good hobby friend called me a few nights ago hinting he would like it in his collection...alas, not for sale.
