For me, it would have to be;
1) The first photo ever taken of Lou Gehrig in a Yankees uniform. From the Bill Mastro Collection. GehrigYEE2010.jpg1923GehrigJoinsYankesNEWSPAPERcloseUP.jpg 2) Pittsburgh Pirates Roberto Clemente Memorial "21" Patch that was worn by the 1973 team. Also from the Mastro Collection. Clemente21Patch.jpg 3) This was a tough decision, but I'm going with this 1958 TYPE 1 photo of Mickey Mantle & Henry Aaron crossing their bats at the '58 Series. mantleANDaaron.jpg what's yours? Picked up a lot of little stuff this year, but two that I've been wanting for awhile came at the beginning of the year and towards the end.

Jimmy,
Great idea for a thread! I actually thought about this one myself. It's been a great year for pickups for me, but... My top 3 would be: 1) Walter Johnson signed and dated photo from his last season- 1927 (REA auction) 2) Dick Enberg's personal scoresheets from all four of Nolan Ryan's 19 K games (Hunt All-Star auction) 3) Christy Mathewson dated win ticket from 1910 (eBay) Last edited by Scott Garner; 12-27-2010 at 08:15 AM. |

Those are two essential tickets to have Mike. Very nice!
![]() And Scott, the Johnson piece is superb, as is the Matty stub, but those Enberg/Ryan score sheets are off the charts! ![]() Growing up in So Cal during the Seventies was a very special time in regards to Baseball. Although the Angels and Dodgers got skunked for the decade, having the pure pleasure of listening to Vin Scully and Dick Enberg calling games on those warm summer nights, while I sat on my bed playing with my card collection, was like... like... like... like nothing I can ever fairly compare it to. Priceless memories for sure. ![]() Happy New Year! My best, Jimmy |

Like you, I'm sentemental about Scully and Enberg calling those summer games in my youth as well. I love the fact that I own one small piece of this. No doubt that that your 1st photo of Gehrig in a Yankees uniform is the bomb! What a great pickup! Mike, I agree with Jimmy that both of the tickets that you ended up picking up are great ones. Both represent unbelievable moments in baseball history. Congrats to you as well! Last edited by Scott Garner; 12-27-2010 at 10:16 AM. |

After a bit of a lull the last half of the year due to family health issues, I finished off the year with a bang.
My favorite item(s) is the group of signed 1934 goudeys I won on ebay at the end of the year. I waited all year to get some new additions for my set. I'm now at 70/96. I'm only showing the Melillo,(the others are shown in the Christmas thread.), as its has a little special story. Another ebay seller has had one listed for over a year for $800. I tried to negotiate it down to a more reasonable level, but he was not willing. In a triumph of patience, I won this one for $78. ![]() Second is a snapshot of the 1927 Yankees team from Spring training. It compares exactly to the offically taken ST team pic, except mine is off to the side. What are the odds that the guy who took the pic would've been visiting ST on the exact day they were taking the team pic? ![]() Third is the Gehrig Burke type 1. ![]() Sorry, I had to add a fourth as it was soo close. A March 1954 Sport Magazine signed by Casey Stengel. ![]() Jimmy, it's hard to believe that the Gehrig pic with Christy Walsh's kid didn't make it. Mike, I think I may have to target one of those Gehrig tickets this coming year, myself! Yours is a nice one. Scott, I love the Johnson pic. It's a beauty. Best to all. Hopefully we'll have an even better new year as well. Mark

I really didn't add that much too the collection this year but if I had to choose a couple it would be these two. I've really wanted a 19th century silver trophy baseball for a while and picked up this 1875 model. Next is a Royals jersey I've wanted for a while. Followed them in the 70's and 80's and was finally able to land a powder blue jersey. It's a 1976 gamer of Hal McRae.

One would have to be my 1922-23 Yankees team signed ball with Ruth on the sweet spot and the other is a Negro baseball team pamphlet that I know relatively nothing about other than it should have Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe pictured!

The nice thing about having only won a few items in the past 12 months is that you can count them all as your favorites!
Type 1s or Type IXs, still love'em all. Mathewson Testimonial Program Ruth Batting, 1921 Ruth Batting, 1928? (Fenway?) - technically won in 12/2009 Mathewson by Thompson in 1912 World Series Last edited by jacksons; 12-27-2010 at 06:30 PM. |

Great thread. Especially that shot above, just as the ball appears and Ruth's closed stance opens up. Great photography -a keeper for sure.

Been a lean year buying cards & memorabilia for the collection.
But got this neat piece at a good price. 1933 letter from Christy Walsh to Bill Dickey letting him know he made the All American Baseball Team. Which was like an All Star selection which started a few years before the actual All Star game. Babe Ruth's facsmile sig is on the left and Dickey's All America patch is also included in the frame ![]() |

This was one of those years where I had my best luck with non-sports memorabilia...but I was very happy to pick up this 1934 easel-backed store display:

A good year is any year that I can remove one name from my want list. An excellent year is any year inwhich I can remove two names from my want list. But to be able to strike three names from that list, it had to be considered a great year. And in consideration of all the other great autograph items I added to my personal collection this year, AWESOME would not be much of a stretch either. My three "wants" no more: Joe Casey Boston Old-Timers game scorecard cut (with partial G.C. Alexander signature at bottom) Jim Walsh cardboard stock cut Del Gainer 3x5 (from Danahy collection) Last edited by HexsHeroes; 12-30-2010 at 08:57 AM. |

It's the damndest thing, but I'm sure others will have similar stories. I was late getting to the standard run-of-the-mill montly antique show here right before Thanksgiving. In over 25 years, I've only seen good movie paper on about four occasions. After roaming the buildings for about four hours and with only three aisles to go, I was stunned to see the envelope inside a display case. Honestly, I didn't expect any cards to be inside...after all, FLASH GORDON serial paper is among the rarest of the rare. But there they were, in perfect unused condition. They weren't cheap, but at less than a third of their true value I still can't believe no one else beat me to them!
