Thanks guys. I would have missed it. It's really great when people post upcoming hobby/baseball related t.v. shows. Although that last Ghost show on the HOF threw me for a loop with the lighthouse thing.

I just finished watching Ken Burns' "10th Inning", which for those of you that are not aware, is the sequil to his immensely popular PBS movie "Baseball" from the 1990's.
I really enjoyed it very much. Burns has a gift, and I would personally recommend to all the members that have not yet seen it, consider taking the time to do so. What did the rest of you that did see it think? Last edited by Scott Garner; 09-29-2010 at 08:14 PM. |

Saw Part 1 last night, and Part 2 starts in about half an hour (out west...)
Thought it was well done, but was disappointed in the amount of air time given to Griffey Jr. He was the greatest player of the era on which they are focusing. But I guess it makes for better TV to focus on McGwire, Sosa, Bonds and the whole steroid thing. Guess that's what happens when you play in the small Seattle and Cincinnati markets. So much attention is always lavished on New York and Chicago... even in the original series, very little was said about the Big Red Machine (which was arguably one of the top 3 dynasties of all time). Another poster (on the Card side) expressed disappointment that Harmon Killebrew was never even mentioned. I'm sure there were other omissions. Can't please 'em all I guess. It is an entertaining series... just a bit frustrating for fans of the smaller market teams. |

I watched both nights. He does a great job, but then I am a documentary junky!
I was interested to see how he would handle the whole steroid era because it may sway how the public perceives it in the long run. He was pretty soft on it. Choosing commentators who all pointed out that we live in a society where many people take performance enhancing drugs, ie Viagra, Levitra, etc. Saying that if you point the finger at athletes you need to point it at society. One man said he believed if PEDs were available back in the day, that Ruth, Mantle and everyone else would have taken them. Another saying what man providing for his family wouldn't take something to stay healthy or extend your career. These are not my opinions, just how Burns layed it out. They almost made you feel sorry for Bonds. He had a hall of fame career and tarnished it because he just couldn't stand anyone getting more attention. He had to show he was the best. There is just not enough time to cover everything. He tried to take major threads and talk about them, even starting way back in time to develop them, like with Barry's father Bobby. Didn't bring up any particular player getting 300 wins, or 500 homers or any personal milestones. But still filled 4 hours easily with the last 16 years or so. Baseball is so rich with so many personal triumphs and tragedies I imagine you could fill each night with only one year of the past. But as usual he did a great job with it. |
