What is the difference between paper loss and flaking exactly? Does SGC consider them the same when grading? Reason I am asking is I got this beautiful N28 Ward in the mail and was amazed when I saw it in person. The only flaw is a small spot of flaking on the right border at shoulder level. Should I even try to crossover to SGC with a minimum of 40 or will flaking make it a 30 as with paper loss?

Since flaking is basically small amounts of paper that is chipping away at the surface I do believe it is considered paper loss. SGC is tough on either....I have some beautiful cards with minute amounts of paper loss/chipping, in blank areas, that have been heavily downgraded due to it. regards

SGC30 at best most likely. Anyway, you have a beautiful card there.

I forgot that part of the question (crossover?). If it were mine I would leave it in that holder if I was thinking of going to SGC.....HRBaker is correct....most likely a 30 at best. regards
ps...Pete- you caught them on a good day!! I never get that kind of grading....

Any type of paper loss weather it seems to be a small amount as explained above or a even just scuffing it can be bad for the overall grade.

Thanks Jeff, I could not be happier with the card whatever the grade.
Pete, no offense, but that is one of the most misgraded N28's I have seen. Going off it, the Ward should get an easy 7. Both company's are inconsistent on grading N28's. The SGC Malone has paper loss on the front but grades higher than 30. The Mulvey has a streak across the front and the Caruthers has some strange Alfalfa mark but it managed a 70. The PSA Malone is stained and it still recieves a 5? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
