On the reverse of Matty's T202 panel it says that he "mowed down the Yankees in 1910 (14 in one game)". With Matty pitching for the NL Giants, and never facing the AL Yankees in a regulation or post-season game -- what the heck are they talking about? My guess is there was some kind of interleague, Mayor's or Governor's Cup type game that is being referenced here. It would be hard to imagine such an exhibition game today meriting reference on the back of a baseball card, but in 1910 it might have been a popular local news item. Any ideas?

Here's a link to the game story (NY Times). Looks like a postseason exhibition. |

This article is a phenomenal laugh -- could you imagine anyone writing about baseball like that today? The best thing is at the end you see that they were still 15,000 shy of a sellout, so it was a disappointing turnout. Funny article -- great find -- thanks!

The game must have been important enough to McGraw, to the point of him getting benched for arguing a call.
We don't see that much enthusiasm during the current All-Star games and definitely not pre-season exhibtions. RC
