Sad News: Bruce Dorskind Died
I opened the paper this morning to an obituary for Bruce Dorskind. I knew Bruce had been sick, so while I am very sad, this news does not come as a surprise. I believe he was 62. He struggled with heart problems for years and his situation only got worse.
I know Bruce was a polarizing figure on this board, but's let's try to keep this thread positive. He certainly was a character, but in person he was a good soul with a sense of humor and a generous spirit. I will miss him. |

I hope his commitment to work didn't exacerbate his health condition.
Life's too short as they say. Rest in peace Bruce. |

RIP Mr. Dorskind. As recognized in Lipset's Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards, he contributed a lot to our hobby.

I am numb. I saw Bruce only a few weeks ago. He and I go back over 25 years and I have always respected his passion for and knowledge of the hobby. I will miss him tremendously. I extend my condolences to his family and friends.

Corey- it was you who introduced me to Bruce sometime around 1990. The three of us shared a lot of good memories.

Re:Bruce Dorskind
I haven't spoken to Bruce in quite some time. I personally
enjoyed reading his posts and his participation on the board. Back in September 2010 he was working on his memoirs and was hoping to have them published by March 2012. Does anyone on the board know if they were ever published, and if so, how I might get access to them? ErikV |

I'm pretty sure he never tackled that project. He had actually asked me to help him with it and we had a meeting, but either deteriorating health or a change of heart ended it abruptly. |

This is very sad news. I had some very strange conversations with Bruce over the years, but never met him. The Youtube that someone posted of him several months ago, made it obvious that he was another person whose internet persona did not match up well with who he really was. Condolences to his friends and family.

Barry, I'm so sorry to learn of Bruce's passing. He was clearly a dynamic figure in the hobby, and very passionate about collecting. You have my sincere sympathy.

I liked Bruce as well and am sad at his passing. Once you actually met the man you learned he was much different from his online persona.
On another note -- and not to take anything away from Bruce -- but another board member, Bob Pomilla, passed away a month or so ago. Fantastic guy, huge supporter of animal rights and someone I was proud to call a friend.

A memory
Shortly after I got married my wife and I met Bruce and his wife at the Pier in NYC to see a Diana Ross concert. After the concert we went for a bite at a local diner. I remember vividly Bruce recounting how he came to acquire his Boston Garter Mathewson. He told the story with such passion that my wife became mesmorized. After we had parted company she commented that before tonight she never thought there could exist someone as obsessed as I about the hobby, but after meeting Bruce she realized that there was at least one other. To this day I'm not sure she meant that as a complement to either Bruce or me, but it is a memory I will always cherish.

My condolences to Bruce's family and friends.
I did not know Bruce personally, but the loss of any board member is a sad day. One thing I can say for certain, is that when the physical dies, the soul does not. His journey has just begun. Thank you Bruce, for giving us one of the funniest threads I've ever read on this board. Sincerely, Clayton |

Bruce Dorskind
I am saddened by the news of Bruce Dorskind's passing. I usually talked to him at every major card show we both attended. I found him to be very interesting, bright, and with a true passion for collecting. Though I rarely had anything off of his list- he was a pleasure to do business with on those occassions .I also enjoyed reading his diatribes on this site- as he was a master at stirring the pot......and creating discussion.
I'd like to express my sincere condolences to all of his family, friends, and collector friends on this site.... |

Just an update to my earlier post....
As polarizing as Bruce and his opinions were on the board it is very nice to see that so many people (myself included) who rarely post and mostly just view the boards have come out, so to speak, with nice stories and memories of Bruce. So much different in person, a true gentleman and hobby enthusiast (understatement). It seems as though no man is afforded the luxury of knowing his true footprint of the world he walks in..... This many responses to a post regarding Bruce and pretty positive the whole way through really speaks volumes about the man. |

Very shocked to hear this sad news. I had a few dealings with Bruce and he was always a man of his word. My condolences to his family.

Thanks for posting this Barry. I just returned tonight from a 3 week road trip and heard about Bruce's passing just prior to jumping on the computer. I met Bruce in 1984 at the Parsippany National. While he could be extreme and eccentric with some people at some times, our conversations and emails were always civil, and usually informative. Ted Zanidakis and I were just discussing the passing of many collectors recently, as well as several people missing from the recent National conventions. Bruce and Gerry Glasser are probably already debating which George Miller cards are most commonly found off center or in lesser grades. RIP Bruce

Interestingly Mark, Bruce and Gerry Glasser were very close friends. They spoke regularly for many years. Strange how it worked out for them.
