Mini-autograph project completed
Not vintage, but I just completed a fun mini-autograph project that I have considered doing for a while now.
The summer of 1968 was an important one for me and baseball. I spent a good portion of the summer of 1968 vacationing in Michigan with my grandparents. Even though I'm from So Cal and the California Angels were the team that I usually rooted for, the Detroit Tigers became "my second favorite team" in 1968. I attended my first game at Tiger Stadium that year and followed many of their games on TV that summer. The Tigers had a group of characters on the '68 squad that had swagger. Too cool! 1968 also was the "Year of the Pitcher" and Denny McLain became the last pitcher to ever win 30 games (the first in over 30 years in baseball). During Denny's 31st win he served up the legendary Mickey Mantle's second to the last HR as he was winding down his legendary HOF career in late September. Perhaps like many families, my grandparents made a ritual of saving all of their old automobile license plates in the garage of one of their cottages up on Lake Huron. Although my grandfather passed away a few years ago, I'm fortunate enough to still have a grandmother that will be turning 102 soon. Anyway, a few years ago I was eyeballing the 1968 set of license plates. It dawned on me that it would be cool to have Denny McLain sign my grandparent's license plate with his ubiquitous 31-6 inscription. This would be a perfect memorial to the summer of '68 and the World Champion Detroit Tigers that sparked my interest in the game! Here is how it turned out for those that care to look: Last edited by Scott Garner; 05-01-2014 at 03:03 PM. |

Scott - that's a great pick-up! That was a fantastic year for baseball, and the '68 World Series is still my favorite.

Scott,
I love that idea with your grandparents license plate. What a great memory and beautiful way to remember a great summer in your childhood. Nice piece, great story. Drew

That Trevor Hoffman card is cool. Scott, that is a very creative and meaningful piece. That is what collecting should be about. Ironically while we were PMing earlier my son called me and told me that Edgar was signing at a store just down the street from my house. I have a Type I 1993 photo of Edgar that I had always wanted signed. I raced out of the house and was lucky enough to be one of his last autograph requests. He was as classy in person as I imagined him to be. I cannot believe almost 20 years have passed since Edgar, Junior, and Randy saved baseball here.

I guess not really a new pick up, but a rediscovery. Found it while looking through a bunch of stuff. Mel Ott letter to Ken Smith.

My autograph pickup from the weekend, nothing special but for $25 couldn't pass it up. (Even came with an 8 by 10 photo of Whitey). A signed 1963 Topps card of Whitey Ford cert from JSA. Only thing I don't like about the card is that someone had it laminated after it was signed by Ford.

Two items I found in Switzerland during the 'Large Ass' Herzog tour of the Alps.
TLS written by Jackson Scholz in 1982. He is one of the athletes featured in the movie 'Chariots of Fire'. He won the silver medal in the 100m at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. He won gold in the 200m. He also won a gold in the 4x100m at the 1920 games in Antwerp. Makes mention of the movie in the last paragraph. Clipped signature of Jack Lovelock. He won a gold medal in the 1500m at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, beating American Glenn Cunningham. A New Zealander, he practiced medicine in New York City. It is speculated that he suffered a dizzy spell when he fell on the subway tracks and was killed by a train in Brooklyn in 1949.
