November Pick ups
I guess I'll kick if off this month. A few items from an old friend who kept telling me he had a few things he thought I might like....I'll say.
- Three vintage gloves, I'm not a glove collector but love vintage equipment. - Two Ted Williams autographs he acquired as a kid.

Eagles flag
This is my favorite pickup in a long time for the Eagles collection. It is a massive pennant/banner that reportedly hung at Franklin Field during the late 1950's. I have been searching for a possible image of this banner in action at Franklin Field, to no avail yet, but I'll keep searching. The banner measures about 9 feet long by about 5.5 feet wide at the left side. It is going to be a challenge to display, but I have a space planned for it.

Clearly, this isn't in the same league as the items posted. However, having only been collecting for about a year, it's a big deal to me. It's important for a couple of reasons. It represents my 1st local find having paid 10.00 bucks for it at a local flea market as well as my first game used bat. The bat belonged to one Tony Parker, a 4th round draft pick of the '65 Phillies. Parker was a pitcher who never made it out of the minors before leaving baseball in '71. I've been looking for him since picking up the bat with no luck. Any advice in locating him would be great.

Gary, the albumen itself is about 6"x9". A pretty good size image for that time period.

bf3 premium
Hi Mike, In 1936 Red Ball Gum Co. came out with a counter top display with 16 small bf3 pennants attached to it. On the display there was an offer to get a large premium pennant. Very few of the large pennants have survived. Of the sixteen possible pennants I have yet to see several. Every so often one or two will show up. The two above are the nicest I have ever seen. The Red Sox pennant is the first one that I have seen. Below is the original counter top display picturing the possible 16 pennants. Below that are some actual premium pennants.

Yes it does, Scott, but I am afraid of damaging the graphics on the bottle by trying to wash it out.
Also picked up this nifty 1968 FB box:

That is great! It would be interesting to compare Rizzuto's thoughts to those of a current shortstop like Brendan Ryan.
Here's a book I've had for a while, but just now took a pic of: Spalding's 1885 'Art of Base Ball Fielding'. I plan to copy all the pages and make them available, but scanning is impossible without damaging the book. The cool part is that it's clearly based on the professional game's fielding, which at the time did not involve gloves.

The best thing about these programs was the price. I got them for free from a vendor because the package was slow in getting to the Post Office. I actually got two of the 1947 PCL programs, same cover, different weeks.
You really have to love the Camel ad on the back of the 1950 Cal/Penn program. How times have changed scan0003.jpg CalPenn.jpgscan0002.jpg Last edited by Bocabirdman; 04-06-2015 at 01:29 PM. |
