Gilbert MainesPersonally, I see beaters as falling into two (at least) catagories:
- those which exhibit significant wear with minor associated damage
- those which have suffered abuse including severe trimming, holes, writing, etc.
The first type of beater is always welcome in my collection. However, the second one would have to have a very attractive image or other characteristic which counterbalanced the damage.
In my beater grading scale, pinholes are considered as evidence that the card was viewed as wall worthy, and therefore is an attribute associated with recognition. Creases are evidence, along with well rounded corners, that the card was handled often and well appreciated. And the list goes on, but damage is another thing.
Glue is not damage, it is a tribute. Same with tape. Damage is hacking, writing, stains - all accidents or choices which are unfortunate.
Do you evaluate beaters with any criteria other than price?
