I have half of the 55 Topps set and have noticed a handfull of the card have a smoother paper/cardboard than others. They also tend to be glossoer and less grainy. Anyone else notice this?

I'm not sure if this answers your question, but there were at least two different Sports Illustrated magazines in 1955 that came with an uncut sheet of eight paper 1955 Topps cards. I recall seeing paper versions of Ernie Banks and Warren Spahn.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant to say cardboard. There are 2 different white stocks that the cards were printed on.

In 54 and again in 55 there were uncut promotional sheets of Topps cards inserted into a couple of the early spring Sports Illustrated editions (as noted in a previous post by Chris Counts). The card stock differed from the standard issue - much, much thinner. In 55 the 8 players on the first inserted sheet were Jablonski, Rhodes, Schell, Moon, Spahn, Spooner, Groat, and Banks. The second sheet had Portocarrero, Rosen, Keegan, Smith, Fain, Sullivan, Turley, and Seivers. So, if yours that differ are from this list of 16, are thinner, and perhaps appear hand-cut...

Different stock in 1955? I never realized that in 30 years!

The backs on the Sports Illustrated cards are flipped 180 degrees on at least some, if not all of the cards.
