I must admit I was some what surprised when I checked this morning the REA results for the two 3.5 copies of the 52 Mantle, especially the SGC copy. IMO, the SGC copies of this card have typically sold for less than an equal conditioned PSA copy (an OC SGC 50 sold in Feb for $17.6K). In this case, it is understandable why the SGC copy sold for what it did.....the only question is how soon will this card be offered again in a new holder sans the staining (and what will it's new grade be)?
http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...searchin=title I asked the same question with this copy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-Topps-3...4AAOSw32lY1Ys5 |

Strong showing for all of the 52 mantles, considering none had premium centering. But the sgc example stands out in terms of price realized. Same with the 51 psa 4 that went for 15.6k. If someone bought either with the intention to clean and resubmit for a higher grade that's quite the gamble.

That's what scratches my head and/or butt.
REA has a PSA 3.5 and fetches 36k, but the SGC 45/3.5 fetches 51K???? So, How is the SGC owner going to clean it up and hope to re-sell it and not lose $$$ You'd think, if he submits it to PSA, he atleast need a 5 grade to come out even or so. (based on the sale of the PSA 6 @78k)

Maybe the SGC buyer feels they could somehow pull a 6 w/o the stain, otherwise, I am not clear on their motives. An alternate theory is that this auction is the start of what collectors experienced price wise last summer.....

You are missing something Irv. The SGC card is opc, not topps. Not the same card at all. No one is paying double for an SGC 10 vs a psa 10, despite the personal preference towards sgc of a few net54 members.
