Thurm was my favorite player growing up. I had a run of his cards as a kid...paid $6 for the rookie in the early 80's. I went to yankee fantasy camp twice...and my # is 15!
I went to Lou Pinella Baseball camp in 1979 and munson was supposed to be there...but he had died. The photo they gave out was autographed by everyone except munson. In the 90's I went to a card show and bought a 71 munson that turned out to have been colored in in the corners to make it look higher grade. I didn't care and still have it. I can understand why someone paid this! Last edited by ullmandds; 05-15-2016 at 05:34 PM. |

I posted it not to slam, but to point out how crazy prices seem to be getting lately, especially thinking, since it's a "newer" so to speak card, that there are likely lots of those cards around?

There are not a lot of that card in mint 9 condition. It is notoriously tough to acquire centered add to that the tough black borders and the added demand of it being a yankee legend and the price in this hot market should be expected.

I've never looked into this Munson card so I was pretty surprised when I saw the price. It's not even his true RC.

I own a 1971 Thurman Munson in an SGC-96...contemplating sending to PSA. If so...crack out? or review? What would you do?

I purchased it during the fall 2014 in an REA Auction. Here is the item description.
Graded MINT 96 by SGC. One of only two examples graded at this level by SGC with none higher out of 288 cards evaluated to date! (Incredibly, PSA has only graded four MINT 9 examples of out 1,650 cards evaluated to date.) Stunning and unbelievably ultra high-grade example of #5 Thurman Munson from the 1971 Topps set. The 1971 Topps set is naturally prone to many different problems, including centering issues, print quality, and especially corner and edge chipping. This card is essentially perfect in all respects. The centering is virtually perfect. All four corners are razor-sharp. The corners and edges exhibit no wear or chipping whatsoever, even under extreme magnification, which is particularly remarkable. Perfectly crisp and clean, both front and back. Entirely deserving of its MINT grade and borderline GEM MINT condition! This is a world-class ultra high-grade example of one of Thurman Munson's most iconic cards from one of the most condition-sensitive sets ever produced. |

Try to cross it in the holder first although just because of politics it will be uphill.

The politics is what concerns me. If I send it in "raw"...it has a better chance of receiving a 9. However...there would be a risk of damaging while cracking it out. Not sure what to do...it might be best to leave as is for now. Though...I am curious what PSA would grade it. It is a beautiful card...that is perfectly or very nearly perfectly centered (52/48 at the worst). You can view the card on the REA website under Fall Auction 2014...it is lot 656. Placing it side by side on my PC with the PWCC 9 that sold Sunday evening...the coloration on mine is darker (richer...bolder...whatever the term is).
