This was the Roberto RC for me. Wanted to spend as little as possible but also get centering and focus/registration. Often the face of the batting image is so blurry. Centering is not 50/50, but best I've seen since getting into the hunt for one.

Bob, that's a gorgeous Herb Score!
I am always a little sad when I look at his cards. I can't help but feel that a cruel twist of fate deprived baseball fans of one of the great pitching careers. As his Baseball Reference page already notes, he would have had the lowest hits allowed per 9 innings pitched in history if he'd only thrown another 141 innings. Over 858 1/3 IP, he allowed only 6.4 hits per 9. And what's odd is that, even though he never regained his form after getting hit, he still didn't allow that many hits. In 1959, two years after being hit by the line drive, he led the league with 6.9 hits allowed per 9, and 8.2 Ks per 9. He just didn't have the command, which is understandable. In his first two years, though, he allowed 6 hits per 9 inning pitched (6.04 to be exact). Compare that to Clayton Kershaw's last five seasons (not including 2015, which thus far isn't up to his normal standards). As great as he's pitched, he still allowed 6.6 hits per 9 IP. Score allowed 6.04! Between 1956 and 1957, Score's 6.04 hits per 9 IP was by far the best in the Majors. There were 86 pitchers to throw over 200 innings combined across those two years. Sam Jones, at 6.90 hits per 9 IP, was next best, almost a full hit behind Score. He had 36 wins, and 508 strikeouts before age 24. Who knows what he might have accomplished.

This is sure to elicit some mixed opinions, but I just picked up what I consider Topps' best card of the 1970s. It captures a HOFer in a classic pose in the absolute prime of his career. Great color too.

+1. I started collecting in 1974. Reggie and Aaron were, and still are, my favorites. Love or hate Reggie, you have to admit he brought excitement like few have before or since. I heard it said several years ago that Reggie's strikeouts were more exciting than most players' home runs. Awesome card. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

78 Reggie is one of my favorite baseball cards. I adore the 1980 Nolan Ryan for the same reason-- just a badass looking card of a major talent in his prime. When card design, color, photo, and subject all come together it's a wonderful thing!

That '74 has always puzzled me. Why did Topps put a dreamy, surreal bright yellow/green background on that sucker??

A few odds and ends to the "Rookie" Collection. Nothing spectacular, but I enjoy them. The Kellogg's Eckersley was in a PSA 9 holder and the Kellogg's Murray was in a PSA 8.

Yes, it really jumps out! Do you think there's any chance it was just the actual photo, maybe with a weird glare or reflection? I will say I kind of like it. And Williams himself may stand out a bit more against the background than if it were regular coloring.

This was an unusual pickup for me. I don't normally go after autographs. Still, here was a great looking card of a star I didn't already have in my 1976 collection, and the autograph seemed to add that much more to the aesthetics.

I was very excited to get this one in the mail today. I was on the fence because I was looking for one in a higher grade, but I love the centering. Thanks to matt c for helping to convince me to pick it up.

I picked this up because the prices for everything I actually need for my collection seem to have spiked substantially recently (anyone out there with a 1960 Venezuelan Mantle/Boyer or a Meadowgold Dairy Mantle?). I purchased this as a "proof," but my assumption is that it was just hand cut off of a sheet that made its way out of the factor. Would love to know if any of you think I am wrong on that (the back is complete as well):

@pokerplyr80...Thats a stunning Clemente RC.
Guys, This is one of those weeks, everything hits me all at one time. Earlier i got the Nolan Ryan RC, then just yesterday i got the Milton Bradley version of it. Saying that i would of gotten a Mays RC before them. WELL..... ITS ONE OF THOSE WEEKS I had no idea my bid was even strong enough at the time, it held up for several days on end and i was maxed out...thinking yeah i getting a email saying outbidded. Woke up today and found an invoice instead. MAYS 51 Bowman RC ....Holy Donkey Shitz!! I know its off-centered, but i got it more for its vibrant color and none of those print lines. ![]()

I hear you there...my want list items seem to keeping creeping up and up like a helium balloon perpetually out of reach. I did cross a few more off my list this week. Would have liked Pete with a little less discoloration on the blue corners, but otherwise the card has great colors and looks great in hand. Last edited by KingFisk; 06-13-2015 at 10:04 AM. |

Love that Leaf Musial! Gorgeous eye-appeal.
Today was a pretty good day. Went to the Mets game - watched an unexpected come back, Granderson was a class act with my son once again, and my son got to run the bases on the field after the game. Then I got home and threw a last minute bid at a card I've been looking to pick up for a few years but never got around to it. That last minute bid was good enough to win it. I once had "this card" when I was a kid. It was all torn up, but it was a Mantle, so I loved it. You could say I was heart-broken when I found out it was a worthless reprint. With this auction win, I've finally added the real deal to my collection. And why not... a picture of Granderson and my son talking today before his at-bat in the bottom of the 3rd. Granderson went on to hit a single.
