The Best Of Net54

[HOF Auto Rookies]

Well, in light of all the poopy posts and threads going on with all these attacks etc., thought it would be a nice time to stray away from that to have a fun thread to showoff the unbelievable collections of autographs here on Net54.

So, post the very best/rarest/or most valuable autograph you have.

I'll start off with my Gehrig DeLong, and Mantle rookie. I never thought in my life would I own a Gehrig autograph, let alone on a card due to how small of a window he had to sign.

And the Mantle, I never thought in my wildest dreams I would own a Mantle signed rookie, and everytime I look at the card, I have the biggest damn grin on my face. I also think it may be the only card in existence that he signed his full name.

The other two that are close, is my Arky Vaughan and if my Hanlon is authentic, that would shoot up to number one. I love Arky as a player, and he is difficult to get on a card, and I don't need to say anything about Hanlon. We all know (guys who collect HOF baseball auto's) how difficult he is.

I feel extremely blessed and fortunate to have been able to get the opportunity to add these, and I look forward to seeing everyone else's 'Best Of'.

Any thoughts on the Hanlon? I'm on the fence about it. I've seen some great exemplars...but again, it is Hanlon lol

I don't know "Hanlon," but I love the "Mickey Charles Mantle" sig.

OK a couple of my favorite autos.

Lou Gehrig cut in a folk art frame.


I know it's not vintage, but I love it. Its a page inside the March 1950 Sport Magazine.


I could have chosen any of my 34 goudeys, but this one is probably rarest. Ed Brandt had the shortest window to sign this card of anyone else in the set, as he died in 1944, except for Gehrig. Now I have seen multiple signed copies of both Gehrig cards, likely due to his immense popularity, but have never seen another Brandt.


1966 Hall of Fame Yearbook. Signed by a bunch all gotten by me in person on the 1980s show circuit.

Here is my oldest and best autograph. The 1st President of the United States, George Washington.

Signature “G:º Washington” on the lower portion cut from an ornately bordered Mountain Road Lottery ticket with the printed date “1768”, 3.75” x 0.75”. On laid paper. Lightly foxed. Fine condition.

The Mountain Road Lottery was a fund raising project conceived in 1767 by George Washington and others to finance the building of a road through the Allegheny Mountains in Virginia, and construct a resort in the Hot Springs and Warms Springs of Augusta County, which were reputed to have healing properties. Washington acted as manager of the lottery. 85% of the proceeds would be paid out in prizes; the remaining 15% would be kept for the Mountain Road project. Each lottery ticket cost £1. As there were other lotteries being run at the time, Washington’s lottery was not a success. In 1769, King George III banned all lotteries in the American colonies. The Mountain Road was built in 1772, however, when the Virginia legislature voted a sum of £300 pounds for the purpose of “clearing a safe and good road from the Warm Springs in Augusta County to Jennings Gap.”

Ripken autographs with inscriptions that I got at the 2010 National in Baltimore, on the printing plates for the cover to the Feb/March 2007 Beckett Baseball Card Plus. I've had the printing plates since Feb 2007.



And if you notice across the top of the plates, it even says "Exclusive Ripken Autographed Memorabilia"! How did they know?

No action for a little bit, let's get this going. Who would like to share some of their beauties.

Here are my favorites. These are all from the collection of John Laity, who got these signed on New York subway platforms between 1933 and 1935. Cards from Mr. Laity's collection are easily identifiable because of the red line he drew as a way of telling the player where to sign. He also trimmed off the "Big League Chewing Gum" banner on the cards that featured those. I have a signed copy of every HOF rookie card from 1934 on, six signed T206 HOF cards, and 44 different signed 1933 Goudey HOFers, but the cards from Mr. Laity's collection are by far my favorites.

Those are great, but I would bet that the red line was drawn after the card was signed, not before.

If you look closely at the scans, you'll see that the signatures go over the red lines.
