Just checking as it has been really slow here on this board. There has been a lot of really good material on ebay, both graded and ungraded lately. A lot of PSA Jones and Hagen cards, many are the tougher large issues etc. Seems like the selling prices have been very cheap. In many cases 50-60% of SMR. This is a large decrease of just a few months ago.
I am Curious as to what others out there might think is the reason? Here are a few of my guesses/observations..... 1- Time of year? 2- Depressed Economy/market 3- Much material comes out of Europe and they are taking a beating recently 4- Too many folks spend to much on REA Auction! 5- Stuff is just overpriced? Personaly I think it is a great time to buy, but like always if you have money to spend and stuff is seemingly going in-expensively, well then it seems like a good deal to you the buyer. I for one have picked up a LOT of raw and graded stuff over the last few weeks, almost all of it items I did not own, such as Williards Chocolates, Ogdens cards in particular and a few other odds and ends. I also noted that there seems to be some new folks hopping into the PSA Set Golf Card Registries. I hope that continues. It is always good to see some new collectors getting into golf cards and the opportunities it provides for me to meet new people in the hobby. |

Dave,
Golf collecting seems to be such a thin market. I think that is the key. I am sure the economy has pulled some interest out.... and pulling any interest out of an already thin market would = low pricing. I don't think the time of the year has much to do with it.... we should be right in the heart of golf collecting season. I am not sure the beating Europe is taking has much to do with it either.... but the very fact that most of the cool cards come from Europe does contribute to keeping it a thin market over here IMO. I agree with you.... it is a great time to buy. I recently picked up an Ogdens Old Tom. Looks like a PSA 7 by condition.... its just beautiful. Although, the very lower left corner looks to have been slightly touched up with black ink. What is pretty cool is the eBay seller listed it honestly and correctly - - - so I was able to pick up this beauty at a bargain price. ![]()

Always nice to see an Old Tom Pick Up. I just have a PSA 4 of that card, would love to upgrade.
I recently just bought a 1902 J Morris, it is raw, so taking a bit of a gamble, but we will see! |

Great Old Tom, Joe. I believe I was the underbidder on that one. Might it be possible to lightly scratch the touched-up corner with a fingernail to remove the pen / marker mark, then have it in its original condition? Just a thought...

And to keep the thread going with pickups, here are a couple of raw Cope's pickups of mine from a few months ago. Not the greatest condition but the price was right!

great Copes Scott. I love that set.
with the Old Tom... the ink probably could come off. I have to look at it with a loupe. It really is just a dot of ink / and possibly I could have it wrong and there might not be ink there at all (but it looks like it was touched up / like many of the Ogdens).

Another pickup from this week - the Millhoff Bobby Jones. Would prefer it not to be off-centered, but for $150 I'm happy to have this one! Corners are great and the centering isn't THAT bad!

Unfortunately all of the Ogdens I bought from one seller all turned out to be re-colored.....he also is unwilling to do anything to rectify the situation.
So....I may just sell them as a near complete set, or I might submit them one more time. PSA has made mistakes on these in the past, but I am guessing they did not here. I really can't see on the majority of them any evidence of being re-colored, but I was a little suspicious on a couple of them. The good news is the lesser condition looking ones still came back with a bunch of PSA 4-5 range stuff which is really good for Ogden's. Be looking for the re-colored cards in an ebay auction near you. I am hoping to get half of my money back at this stage, and one thing is for sure, I will have it in MY auction description. |
