Def looking forward to how all of this gets catalog. You have such a keen eye and attention to detail. Simply amazing. Cheers man!

Hey Doug, great find on the Wajo.

Note that mine has the one belt loop and the baseball magazine on the right! A fourth version i guess.

Nice one Paul. I'm currently in the process of trying to procure one of those single belt loop, right caption versions... I was going to wait until I succeeded to announce what will henceforth be known as the "Puck Variation".

Insert smiley face here.

lol. It’s one of the coolest photos around, if you cant find one i might have to part with it to enter “the collection”. It’s so weird that they tinkered with these so much and there are so many variations.

That's part of why I fell in love with the set. There are less than 700 pictures and over 1500 total variations (that I am aware of, so far), so on average each of them has a variation (although less than half of them actually do).

Received a new Ruth m114 today. Caption variation #8 of Ruth picture version #6. This is my 25th Ruth m114, and I'm aware of at least one I'm missing.

Doug you mention 25 Ruth M114's, how many M113's and how team photos he was in M113/ M114?

Happy Holidays and Thanks for sharing your collection. And for cataloging and very important and long running set. Maybe the longest running set in Baseball card History after Topps?

Merry, Happy, etc. to everybody.

Ruth does not have an individual m113, but he's included in the Red Sox Team m113 released in Dec 1915.

He's included in the Yankees Team m114s in 1921, 1923, 1926 (2 caption versions) and 1927.

Below are his 8 different individual pictures (the cropping on the smaller multi-bat version is different, note the distance above his hat), with the number of caption variations that I am aware of for each.

So, for those of you keeping score, Ruth is pictured on 1 m113, 5 m114 teams and 26 m114 individual posters for a total of 32 Baseball Magazine posters.

And Ruth isn't the player on the most posters (I think it's Gehrig, but honestly I never really thought about team pix until this post), although he does have the most different individual pictures (Walter Johnson has 6 pix).

With thanks to Scott Gaynor and his ebay store, I received my 117th m113 today. Extra special thanks for the careful shipping to avoid potential damage.

This Tris Speaker version, with him facing towards the left was released in Sept 1912. It was the first of two different pictures used for Speaker m113s, the other version has him... facing right.

I had it on my "might not exist" list due to never having seen one in my 20 years or so of looking.

With thanks to the most recent The Collector Connection auction of the Carl Frysinger collection, here is variation #3 of the Robin Roberts version 1 (of 2) m114. It's the 1,427th m114 in my collection.

I'm getting far enough along in my dating of the m114 posters to say with confidence that his three posters were released in Dec 1949, Dec 1951 and Dec 1956

If anybody has this one (with the font about 1/2 inch below the picture) that is not autographed, I'll trade you straight across for my autographed one.

Did some measuring today and found these differences on the pictures on the Johnson Arm posters :

Two loop versions
m113 Johnson version #2 (there are 2 variations of name placement)
Both pictures measure 8.75 X 18 inches

One loop version, caption on right
m113 Johnson version #3
Picture measures 8.75 X 17.5

One loop version, caption on left
m113 Johnson version #4
Picture measures 8.5 X 17

By the way, m113 Johnson version #1 (with 2 variations) is vertical and shows him throwing while wearing a sweater.

With thanks to Steve and his team at Collect Auctions, I added a completely new Archer m113 caption to my collection yesterday.

My previous Archers only had a right hand caption, this one also has a left caption.

I'm up to 121 m113 posters.

I'm still looking for these that I know exist :
Cardinals Team
Walter Johnson in sweater
Marty O'Toole
Victor Saier
Frank Schulte

And these that I'm not sure :
Braves Team
Pirates Team
Wally Schang
Bob Shawkey
Jimmy Sheckard
White Sox Team

Default New Newcombe and Wilhelm m114 variations - #1429 & 1430

With thanks to ebay (even though somebody bought a Campy that I wanted from the same seller) I received my most recent winnings today which included a couple really good ones.

Completely new captions of the full body Newcombe and the Hoyt Wilhelm.

Poor Hoyt couldn't catch a break, I knew of the misspelled first name version, but this last name misspelled version is one I hadn't seen before.

The bottom ones in the pictures are my new ones.

These put me at 1,430 different m114 posters.

I also upgraded a couple m114s and an m113 Mack, so it was a good day.

Default New Elliott variation m114 #1449

Thanks Gary, but I'm not holding my breath. At least I now know that Campy variation exists.

Meanwhile, a couple days ago I found scans of 19 new ones that I had bought a couple months ago that I had forgotten about due to a month long business trip. I just arrived to my starting point on the next trip, this one for 6 weeks, so I won't be home to see new m114 #1450 of Christy Mathewson I just won in Heritage, along with a Gehrig upgrade.

My favorite of the new 19 is this Robert Elliott whose release I put as August 1954, a year after his retirement and a couple years after his second m114 poster type was released in April 1952 picturing him with the Braves.

Pictures are the new Pirates version, the Braves version, and a comparison of the 5 Pirates captions I know of (with the new one at the bottom).

Default Gehrig m114 #30

With thanks to Lucas00 for another smooth transaction, I returned home from my latest adventure to find this Lou waiting for me.

This is my 13th variation of the Lou "holding a bat" m114, and 30th overall. The close up shows the most similar of my other Gehrig font variations.

#1,456 in my m114 collection, although I'm debating with myself as to whether the 1917 Giants and White Sox teams that I currently count as m113s because of their size should actually be considered m114s due to their caption fonts and release dates.

The fonts themselves are identical, but the placements are different.

Take a look at the picture comparing the two captions.

On the bottom one, note these differences :

1 - The left caption is shifted towards the right, the "LL" in "baseball" is under the uniform

2 - The name is shifted to the left, the two pinstripes that are closest together are above the "N", they are above the "E" in the top one

3 - The right caption is shifted to the left, the "EN" in "enlarged" is under the uniform

Default m113 Catalog

I am quite happy to being typing this post.

With thanks to Alan, John, Adam, Gary, Paul, Cody and many others I present to you an updated catalog of the Baseball Magazine m113 posters. First in date of issue order, then alphabetical.

I am planning to put together a pdf booklet which will include pictures of each poster and any variations. Not sure of a timeline for that. If I was better with creating word docs it would probably only take a few days, but I'm not that good. Yet, haha.

Please feel free to point out any mistakes or typos, anything I missed or have gotten wrong. I just want it to be as correct as possible, I won't be offended or bothered or mad.

Next comes the m114 catalog, I'm maybe half way there.

Doug

Seriously great work so far Doug. This undertaking for a single person is immense. And no doubt will be the go to for anybody who wants to collect m113/m114s.

Congratulations Doug!

Truly an amazing accomplishment! I can't even imagine the years, effort, research etc... that went into all of this. Unbelievable. Well done!

The baseball community will most def be referring to your catalog for years to come and also be known as the "go to" source for M113...and M114.

Looking forward to seeing the M114 catalog, keep up the great work!

Do any of you guys have access to early versions of the American Card Catalogs?

I'm curious in which printing m113 & m114 posters are first mentioned.

Thanks in advance,
Doug

Default The 60 different player pictures used for m113 posters

In addition to these 60 pictures (of 53 different players) there are 18 team pictures (for 15 franchises) and Johnson's arm.

The players with two pictures are :
Chance, Cobb, Evers, Johnson, Maranville, Marquard, Mathewson and Speaker.

There are none with three m113 pictures, although there are players who have more than two pictures used if you include m114 posters.

The teams with two different years issued are :
The Athletics, Giants and Red Sox.
Many Teams have more than two years issued if you include the m114 posters.

The 61 different player photos currently have 104 total known variations. There are no team variations that I am aware of.

I will post the team photos at some point soon(ish).

Thank you to Alan Kleinberger for pictures of the Saier and Schulte posters, whose sizes are approximate to the others.

Doug

Thanks for the kind words.

My collection was the reason I became interested in studying the set, now my study of the set seems to be the reason for my collection.

And I'm learning that Word (the software) is more complicated than I realized...

Default m113 Teams pt 2

In alphabetical order, here are the final 9 of the 18 m113 Teams that I have confirmed exist.

I think it could be argued that the White Sox poster is an m114, but I choose to call it an m113 based primarily on its size.

Default m113 Teams pt 1

In alphabetical order, here are the first 9 of the 18 m113 Teams that I have confirmed exist.

The Cardinals size is only an estimate.

I think it could be argued that the smaller Giants poster is an m114, but I choose to call it an m113 based primarily on its size. Yes, I not the irony.
