Here are some packs from the collection. A couple rare one in the mix - one of only a handful of Drums (this one has a 1910 tax stamp on the reverse), and the only known Hindu that matches the advertisements, albeit the front of the back has been trimmed down long ago by an early scrapbooker. Also one of only 2 Red Sun packs I've seen (this one has been flattened).

Thought I'd rekindle this thread with a cabinet photo "The Pennant" billiard hall/cigar store in Tacoma, WA, circa 1915, with some very drool-worthy Tuxedo ad pieces on display, along with a pennant above the doorway commemorating the very good 1915 South Tacoma Tigers championship semi-pro team.

I actually have a few combined tobacco store/billiard parlor photos as it wasn't uncommon to combine the two enterprises but that's really a spectacular window display - not really the actual display as it's a bit pedestrian as store windows go - but the fruit it bears when viewed today. Same with the other side of the store - a common Omar sign with some packs glued to it. Interesting that the picture has smalltown USA written all over it - but as advertising was expensive to produce and distribute and a dedicated display was typically intended for larger cities - curious as to what the population and industry of Tacoma was like in that period?

Man what I wouldn't give to be able to pick through the memorabilia in the main booth. |

That's a great Hassan piece. Usually their advertising was more heavy-handed and this one quite different - subdued and sentimental. Very nice.
There are books that were printed often with the title "exposition" in the 1890's and forward that would feature photographs of various display booths at these things - ostensibly the larger shows. They are usually quite pricey - at least based on the 3/4 I've seen. They can also be found on printed and real photo postcards. Having a mounted photo is more interesting to me - but they too are so infrequently encountered. The display from the Ginter company replicated in the 1893 Paris Exposition tobacco album must have been spectacular based on the representation. |

Not exactly an advertising piece but tobacco related....
Mint condition humidor presented to GH Stead by the Winnipeg Victorias hockey team 1915. (As stated on the plaque) Stead was the secretary/treasurer of the Victorias from the early 1900's till, presumably, 1915. The Winnipeg Victorias won the Stanley Cup in 1896, 1901, 1902. And the Allan Cup in 1911. |

while I have seen 3/4 original Bull Durham cases over 20 years - there are quite a few (many) reproductions out there - they usually show uneven signs of aging and distress for effect - and the image having been taken from an original - looking at the shading in color present in the upper "tab" it's pretty easy to see where the discoloration doesn't match the expected wear from a 100 year old case.

I've noticed the bull durham repro boxes more frequently at flea markets over the past year. I never saw any boxes in 10 years and all of a sudden I've seen a bunch.

Hey 1880nonsports, or anyone......
Henry I've always wondered why no Sports or Non-Sports cards were ever issued with the Chesterfield brand ? Liggett & Myers introduced this brand in 1912, packaging these cigarettes in the standard pack. What did they use for cigarette pack stiffiners (if not cards) ? TED Z . Thanks for the compliment regarding my World Series program(s). I have most of the Yankees World Series programs from 1923 - 1981.
I try to acquire the programs that are scored, as I find them to be more interesting. Liggett & Myers was given the following Cigarette brands when ATC was divested in May 1911: Piedmont Fatima American Beauty Home Run Coupon King Bee And as you know, tobacco cards (BB & non-sports) with some of these advertisements (American Beauty, Coupon, Fatima, Piedmont, etc.) continued to be issued until 1919. So, I find it quite puzzling that the Chesterfield brand was not printed on tobacco cards shortly after its introduction by L & M in 1912. TED Z . |
