I not aware of any premium inserts associated with this brand which would have been issued circa 1887-1888.
It's a pretty pack, however.
Perhaps some 19th Century expert on this forum may chime in here with some information.

Ted - non-sports cards would have been issued with Dukes Cameo(such as the F62s). Duke manufactured the brand for a while. I believe your pack dates to 1892, so definitely an early one.

Thanks for the info on the Duke's CameO pack.

I was thinking it might contain non-sports cards circa 1887 - 1889, since the pack has a July 20, 1886 Patent date on it. And, the slide inside this pack has a Sept 28, 1886
Patent date on it.

Can we arrive at any kind of conclusion(s) based on these dates ?

Ted,

Duke's Cameo brand went from paper pack to slide and shell box in 1886 and would retain many of the dates you mention on the pack for decades. The date that really matters is the tax stamp over-print. Your tax stamp overprint appears to be either 1892 or 1893.

Another strong clue that quickly dates your pack to 1890s (or later) is the appearance of "ATC" or "American Tobacco Company". Most Duke, A&G, Kinney, Kimball, and Goodwin packs were updated upon the merger in early 1890 to reference ATC. Your pack is post merger. I have several pre-merger Cameo packs, here are a few from 1889. You can see several changes that occurred between June 1889 and August 1889. I've circled the overprints (June, August, & October of 1889) to better clue you into what you should be looking for on your pack.

The cigar box is a beauty, dedicated to the Detroit Wolverines with numerous references to baseball and the Detroit Base Ball Club (DBBC) including the team picture. It serves as a storage box for some of my favorite Goodwin & SF Hess packs.

Also note that the Old Mill advertisement is printed, but the text referencing baseball picture cards is hand-written. Too coincidental in my opinion.

I think that the sign and "boxes" on either side are real just not the "base ball picture cards" verbiage..….. I have either seen this frankenmonster before or something very similar.

I found this item in Bisbee, AZ. It is a door off a display case that was in the E.B. Wallace Smoke Shop and Pool Hall located on Main St. in Bisbee from 1910 to 1979.

I wanna say she paid around $350. I know she got the price down about $75-$100 from his original asking price. Yeah, she's a keeper. She tolerates all this "junk" of mine and lets me have the basement all to my collection. She even pretends to be interested in it sometimes, lol.

Bought at the National for $20 from John Rumierz, this ad card for 1950 WWG "Big League Stars" set of International Leaguers.

Given its postcard size, I think it's the front window display insert for vending machines that held the V362 Big League Stars set and sold individual cards for 1c each, much like Exhibit Company machines. It's labeled as a joint production of Cramer Gum (East Boston USA) and World Wide Gum (Granby, Ontario CA), implying Big League Stars set distribution on both sides of the border.

Pretty excited to add this to my cigarette pack collection. It's the first "soft" wrapper I've come across in person or had the opportunity to purchase (I have a scan of an old one, and this is the only other one I've ever seen). I have a 10-count period slide and shell Coupon box in my collection already, however there is some speculation that the cards may have been packaged in these soft packs which could explain in part why they are more flimsy than other cards.

I would have thought a more sturdy card might come in a flimsier pack? Maybe the -3 series?

It’s a good question guys. When I first got into collecting packs,
One theory was that the stiffer cardboard tore the packs more easily, so they used a thinner stock. Doubt we’ll ever know. When I came across a 10-count slide and shell that dated to the 1910s, I felt pretty comfortable it was a proper pack, but I always wanted to add the soft pack, too, in case the theory ever holds true.

Joe, thanks for posting your Rodeo hot dogs placard. Beautiful. I love the 1955-56 Rodeo Meats Kansas City A's cards, and devoted a chapter to the 1955 promotion in my book on immediate post-war regional-food issues. That's a diabolically tough set to complete, back in the day, and to this day. The whole KC area was very proud of their A's, and the hot dog company went all-out to give their fans a terrific trading card set promote them.

At the National last month, I picked up this Egyptienne Cigarettes Advertisement (13 1/2" x 10" poster).






I'm including an Egyptienne Cigarette pack to accent this post....and, a B18 flannel. The B18 flannels were issued wrapped
around some of these Cigarette packs....here we have Casey Stengel.

A sample of some recent cigarette pack pickups (most coming from a couple REA lots).

I'll start with an early OJ pack. This is the earliest 10 count pack I've found, dating to June of 1887. I'm aware of five earlier 20 count packs which seem to be far more common in 1887 but then become scarce/non-existent afterwards. The 10 count packs became far more common for Goodwin and others by 1888. This pack likely contained a baseball card. Would love to hear of other early OJ packs.



Here is the latest Dogs Head pack I've seen, July of 1890. This pack would be post ATC merger and likely issued after Old Judge cards ceased to be inserted in packs. It us far more common to find a Dogs Head pack from mid-to-late 1889 . . . and likely more desirable as they contained baseball cards. I have several DH packs from 1889, this being a rather uncommon later pack issue.



While A&G Straight Cut Number 1 packs are not the most difficult, it is rare to find one issued during the couple month period that N29 cards were issued. Here is a September 10th 1889 pack which is right in the middle of N29 production. This pack is missing the top flap and has writing on front and a side suggesting it was used to hold "easy stamps" for an early stamp collector. The pack otherwise presents nicely with a complete stamp and overprint which can be tough on A&G packs as they would fold the tax stamp across slide & shell.



Then a couple rare packs that don't have direct connection to baseball cards but would have featured some non-sport cards, competing for the smoker's attention.



The last pack was unknown to me before it was listed, Kimball's Japanese Perfumed Cigarettes. This brand was introduced by Kimball in mid 1887? and didn't last very long. On the front of the pack, reading from right-to-left, it states "Japanese Perfumed Cigarettes" in one circle and "Kimball & Co. Rochester N.Y." in another.
