Also, congrats on the Little Jockey pack. Have you been able to locate evidence of what cards were distributed in them? The GQ carton is also nice, I was watching it but not ready to make the jump from packs to cartons. Regarding the various GQ packs, can anyone share a picture of the "ornate pack"?

I recently completed a run of all pre-ATC merger Duke cigarette packs. These would have competed with A&G, Kinney, Kimball, Goodwin (my favorite), and the others during the card boom of 1887-1890. The Duke's Best brand would be the last brand to join the others before the merger, having been introduced September 1889.
All six are pre-ATC merger examples.

Jay, what a beautiful Goodwin trio, that GQ pack is no doubt the finest in existence (if I recall, a clear 1887 overprint). The Lone Jack isn't too shabby either

Awesome run, Joe. I'm away for the weekend, but when I get home tomorrow evening, I can post an ornate GQ pack.
Jay - that Palo Alto pack is amazing. As you know, I'm also a big fan of the GQ! Just let me know when you want to let it go ;-)

Correct if I'm wrong, but I think there are 13 subjects in the LONE JACK set. So, here is the BIG question....does anyone have a complete set of these rare cards ? TED Z . |

That is correct. The Lone Jack set mirrors the Browns Champ Old Judge subset which has thirteen cards. As to whether there exists a complete Lone Jack set, I've heard one is out there but I have not seen it nor do I know who might have it.

Hello Jon, I echo Jay's question and then some. Is that a full pack, just outer shell, an image you happened across, etc.? Is there any mention of ATC on the pack? Tax stamp?, overprint? Thanks for sharing.
Jay, some amazing Buchner pieces, did they all come together or did you piece them together one by one. Amazing either way.

I believe Jim Shaw shared the photo with me years ago. I can't recall where the pack came from, but I believe it was complete, albeit empty. I also have a lower quality scan of a flattened pack - no idea where I got this scan, but unfortunately it doesn't yield any additional info.

While we're on the topic of early cigarette packs, below are the only 2 known Kalamazoo Bats packages that I'm aware of. Both are identical in size and would fit a card, so my best guess is that these were used for distribution. Note some of the subtle differences in the font used for "The Best Cigar in the World".

I posted this on the T207 thread as well, but after much searching (and assistance), I was able to track down and photograph the Napoleon pack at the National. This is the first time I have ever seen a correct Napoleon pack, so to say they are rare is an understatement. This one was discovered in a church in Boston with a Napoleon card tucked inside. Full 1912 tax stamp makes the box even cooler!

Well, this ain't a Tobacco, Candy, or Gum advertisement....however, I guess we can loosely classify it as a "Bread" adv.
![]() Toots Shors restaurant in mid-Manhattan was the quintessential "hang-out" for Sports celebrities (and, of course many other celebrities from 1903 to 1977). ![]() I'd date this gathering at Toots Shor's circa 1952 **. Nine of these 14 ballplayers started their BB careers in the deadball era. ![]() Check-out the menu for that day ![]() ![]() ** Note......My guess as to the date of this gathering is based on the passing away of Arlie Latham in Nov 1952. Arlie was a very colorful guy. Arlie is depicted on several OLD JUDGE cards (N172). And, T206 cards (460-only series). ![]() TED Z . Last edited by tedzan; 09-16-2017 at 03:15 PM.
