1894 Betz Baltimore Cabinet Card

It's not too often that a 19th Century card as significant as this one shows up on e-bay in an auction format. Thoughts on legitimacy? I believe that the card pictured is good but the seller did not know what he had. Still fetched a decent price but I think the buyer got a pretty good deal if all works out.

And I was the under-underbidder, right behind Leon. Thanks to Leon for his thoughts on it (and confirming its legitimacy) a few days ago. Creasing aside, the image was very strong and bold on the card!

That's a fantastic cabinet, and I guess it was the condition that kept the price down. Aren't those images the exact same ones found on the 1894 Baltimore Orioles pin?

Maybe the same as the Alpha Photo Engraving set as well?

You're right Phil, the Alpha set for sure.....maybe that's what I was remembering. But it could be the pin also.

Yes they are, except for Gleason whose face on the card is a drawing.

yep - I too was an under-under-under bidder...didn't know it would go so high (stupid me).

I do have an interesting 1894 Orioles piece in my collection that I was hoping someone could help me out with. I purchased it from Rhys about a month ago and is labeled as a Supplement. Any thoughts as to authenticity and/or whether it is actually from 1894?

Derek if you bought that from Rhys you can be almost 99.99999999% sure it's real and labeled correctly.

Packs I am guessing that its a fake then since the tint of the color is to dark on this one

I sold mine in nice shape for $11,500. I didn't bid much as the seller is a scumbag here in Baltimore and the piece was rough. But these are around, probably about a dozen or so known.

Here's a better scan. Didn't realize I was supporting a scumbag, but the image quality is, as previously stated, better than most examples I've found. I think the artist did a damn good job on the Gleason portrait, even though he left out the white carnation.

Heckuva card! It depicts 7 HOFers. Is there any other team card known with that many HOFers?

Corey- The only team that comes close is the NY Giants of the late 1880s. This team had 6 HOFers: Ewing, Ward, Keefe. O'Rourke, Connor, and Welch. I believe they are all pictured on a Joseph Hall cabinet as well as other period images.

Don't know about a card, but the 1924 New York Giants world series roster had 8 players who made the HOF, plus McGraw:

Terry
Frisch
Jackson
Lindstrom
Youngs
Wilson
Southworth

Hank's on the right track, actually, the 1925 W504 NY Giants team card pictures 9 HOF'ers. I'm sure that is the all-time record.

It's ugly, but this is the one Phil referenced w/ 9 HOFers.

It includes H. Wilson, R. Youngs, F. Frisch, H. Jennings, G. Kelly, B. Southworth, T. Jackson, B. Terry, & F. Lindstrom. It doesn't hold a candle to the 1894 Orioles pieces, but it probably is the "record" for HOFers on one card.
