Recent pickup, little dirty so I'll probably give it a quick cleaning to help brighten the colors. Will look nice along the other tiger pennants I have with the "stalking tiger" graphic.

Got this recently. These cloth ASCO/Button House player pennants always intrigued me. I’d love to know if a checklist exists. This is smaller (14”) than the slightly more common ones (20”).
What’s weird is the airbrushed cap. He had only played with the Cubs, 1965 through 1971 before his trade to Oakland. What other cap could he be wearing? I can only think of a trademark/copyright issue with the team… the “Cub Power” cloth pennants seem to date to approx. 1969. Last edited by thetahat; 06-28-2024 at 03:28 PM. |

That appears to be the case. This has 1969 MLBPA trademark but not MLB, in the back of the picture. Same with the large white Cub Power pennant pictured below. The red one which does not airbrush out the Cubs logo on the pics, has both MLBPA and MLB trademarks.

I found this interesting patent application filed by Ted Scarlett, of Imprint Art Co., a.k.a., IMPKO, concerning an invention to expedite the manufacture of pennants in 1959--a half century after Repco's John Clark Udall filed his first patent for the screen printing method:
See: https://ppubs.uspto.gov/dirsearch-pu...oadPdf/2888900 IMPKO wasn't known for making the highest quality pennants, but this idea concerning the manufacture of spines ("hems") and tassels ("ties") was interesting inasmuch as it saved time, labor, and provides further insight on how some pennants were made, like this one below, at the mid-century mark. By the way ... how'd you like to visit Intercourse, PA??

Been to Intercourse as a kid. My parents were into road trips and when it wasn't Rapid City, SD to see Mount Rushmore (and every tourist trap along the way) or Yellowstone...Pennsylvania was a popular destination. Don't remember much about Intercourse other than being old enough to realize it was a weird name for a town...as I was typically buried in comic books and football cards in the backseat, which my mother plied me with like morphine to keep me from complaining on the road.
This is one of Impko's more popular creations...The Alien Brownie. You can still find these in the packaging. Kyle...Did you find the blog article out there. If you google the name it comes right up. Here's an excerpt. "IMPKO: SOME CHEEZY POP HISTORY by Art Chantry"" Not much is factually know about IMPKO, they began as a souvenir picture postcard company sometime just before the turn of the 20th century. Soon, they started to market 'pennants' - those little miniature flags that you get as souvenirs with tourist locations silk screened on them. That quickly switched over to cheezy 'sports' pennants. Basically any novelty item silk screened on paper was also produced by them: bumper stickers, signs, novelty 'plaks'. Water transfer decals (produced with a silkscreen process) were soon to follow. It was a small step to simply make the same images inside little square decals and sell them alongside the other souvenir paraphernalia. IMPKO itself had gone out of business in the 1970's (or thereabouts. nobody is sure). "

Cool info, Domer. It sometimes amazes me to discover what is "patented." This Giants pin has a patent number on the back for its very janky clasp mechanism.

I picked this up recently -- it's the most delicate piece of fabric I've ever seen. I asked an Indianapolis historian when it's from, and he thinks its the 1914 Federal League team.

This one (with identical Player graphic) has always been attributed to the 1930s-40s.... https://insidetheparkcollectibles.co...-LOT14004.aspx So either the maker kept this graphic on file for a few decades, or the Mini Pennant is significantly more recent than the historian estimated. I would tend to believe it's the latter, but eager to hear what others think.

Stretching the definition of pennant a bit and not sure what I'll ever do with it, but this was too cool to pass up. I was told it hung in Briggs Stadium in 1952, where the Texans played twice that year. The search for a picture begins...

No it’s legit, cloth, just smaller than typical. It has the MLBPA trademark and the copyright symbol under Cub Power. I’m guessing they had pennants for at least the top Cubs players, and Holtzman was a 17 game winner in 1969.

I picked up on a few pennants and am wondering if anybody can help identify the year of these two pennants.
The first is a Cardinals. Found similar but not the same. Believe it is a 1960"s era. The second is a hockey pennant. Toronto Maple Leafs. Believe it is of 1960"s era also. Anybody know about hockey pennants? |

That Cardinals could be anywhere from 1960-75. I’d guess late 60s. Can’t tell for sure but it looks like the stiffer felt which would make towards the later end. The Maple Leafs is ??? … I think this was made by a Canadian company … this kinda resembles others that were also made without a spine from the 1967-68 era - but not exact. It could be earlier. They will both look nice on your wall! Last edited by thetahat; 07-06-2024 at 02:46 PM. |

There is a hockey series made right around the time of expansion, they all have the same painted spine. They are also cloth. I have noticed many destination pennants of Canadian towns and cities that look like this.

I have a couple different pennants that have both cities listed on the pennant. They are clearly from 1961 and I assume that there was overstock from LA that they did not want to trash so they put San Diego on it while keeping the LA in the shield. Times were tough for the early AFL and money was tight. This is only an assumption, not something I know for sure. Anyone out there have any info on these? Maybe they made them to keep both cities interested?

So, I don't think "San Diego" was added after-the-fact to update the pennant. I suspect this may have been a bootleg pennant that was briefly sold at some civic gathering in San Diego welcoming the new team? Just a guess. It's a cool pennant and I was unaware of one like it. Are there more out there for AFL teams like this? Dallas Texans? New York Titans?

It's very possible that this was for a civic event to welcome the team, hadn't thought of that before. They did have such a function at the El Cortez Hotel before the 1961 season. They had this team photo on the wall of the banquet room. It shows the 1960 LA Chargers but is labeled San Diego Chargers.
