I'm neither a pennant nor WFL guy so I'm not overly familiar with what's out there but I cannot recall ever seeing a pennant - or anything - with "BELLS" printed. as mentioned, not my area of expertise, but I'm only familiar with Philadelphia "BELL" items. good looking piece either way, perhaps there's a handful of printing screw-ups out there that never made it to the souvenir stands. I picked this up last week as part of a larger lot of Sports memorabilia. I never heard of this team before. Street vendor knock off. Not an official pennant. The official ones are same style but spelled "BELL" also has a WFL copyright logo and comes in yellow or orange

I agree Mark's collection is second to none. Not only is there a large number of great pennants, but the condition is amazing.

Incredible collection Mark! I am always hoping to find a ratty oversized teens era pennant at a flea market for very little money (I can always hope). This is a fairly recent antique shop pick up. Has anyone seen this before? I checked Google and only found the Connie Mack ring leader pennant that looks similar, although mine is smaller and does not have Mack's name. Could this have been issued after Mack's passing?

![]() Actually, I believe the '49 All Star Pennant is the rarer of the two. Both are scarce, but that '49 circular design is never seen. I've seen only one other, that was offered by Hunt Auctions. So if Jerry's example came from Hunt's, then that is the lone one. Rob: FWIW, I also admire Jerry's impeccable framing and presentation style (and actually prefer his to mine as well!) Nobody does it better than Jerry, and Board Members like "Mike H", "Scott G" and "Jester", just to name a few. The reasons I do mine the way I do is three-fold... 1. I don't like to hand the pennants over to a third party Framer. Just my own OCD affliction... would much rather do the framing myself. 2. Double-matting them that way requires an adhesive (tape or glue) or using a micro-thin "fishing line". Something to hold the pennant firmly against the back mat. Even though experienced framers can do this virtually invisibly, I can't bring myself to tape the reverse or stitch through the actual pennant. 3. Cost.... By doing it all myself (with sectional frame components) I save at least $120 per pennant on framing. 50 framed pennants X $120 is over $6,000 I've saved in framing cost... that's more disposable money for pennants! One more hard to find pennant - 1955 World Series
Pennant was found in an attic back east. Leaky roof - rain caused the dis-coloration but no holes, tears etc. I used Mark's framing technique for this one. ![]() Jerry Sage |

^^^^ That is one cool pennant! Is the fringe on the right end "faux"? Are other pennants known in this same style? Too bad about the discoloration.

Good to hear.... Even at $25, it wasn't a bad buy. I think these retail for around $35 - $40. And this is a tougher variation for them.

It's both actually! The fringe along the spine is real. The "fringe" at the tip is faux (painted on). Very unusual and desirable variation.

Interesting pennants in recent live auction .... large (40") Cubs and Tigers pennants from early 20th century, same style, with two color felt, reinforced edges, and an embroidered leather logo/design with details apparently burned (?) the leather. Tigers pennant is fantastic and I wanted it but got pretty high ... I actually have the Cubs but with the gold and purple colors inverted.
I wonder if this is the oldest known "series" of pennants ..... I've seen Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, and I think Red Sox? Clearly they were all made by the same company or person. And I am guessing they pre-date silk screening, around 1910. The leather (and added accents) seems to serve the purpose of providing details that embroidered felt (as in other old, non-screened pennants) could not achieve. Anyway, doubt we can solve this mystery but I find myself intrigued by them ... any help? http://huntauctions.com/live/imagevi...=219&lot_qual= |

1. Another one surfaced not long ago 2. Not quite as attractive as some other oversized versions (just my opinion) 3. Numerous moth holes scattered throughout the body of the pennant. The similar Tigers version was more attractive, and was significantly better in terms of condition. Last edited by perezfan; 09-20-2016 at 10:35 AM. |
