The Yankees pennant is early 70’s utilizing the older styles. That style was used from the 50’s all the way to I guess the 70’s. The pennant needs to be dated on the material and stitching. Generally these pennants were already using synthetic stitching for the piping, but not all. The earliest of synthetic pennants still used regular fabric string / thread for stitching the piping.

The "New York" script matches other known ADFLAG pennants from that era for the Yankees and (AFL) Jets.

Thanks. I was thinking it had to be made somewhere before 1969, otherwise it would have the MLB logo.

What pushed me later initially was that it's warped. 1970s material is more prone to warping than 1960s material. At the end of the day, pennant dating is like horseshoes and hand grenades....close counts and is as good as we'll ever get unless it's dated.

I have that same Yankees version on softer felt. They went with that particular design for many years. The really stiff ones are late 1960s - early 1970s. I have seen them so brittle that they actually crack (not something that real felt would ever do, and that's where I draw the line in my personal collection, haha). |

Beware of some pennant lots in the Huggins and Scott Auction that just opened. I see at least 3 lots with reproduction pennants that are not disclosed, and are being sold as original...

Yes but I have seen repros of the molester pennant, too, on cardboard-like felt.
On a related note, I wish Mitchell & Ness stamped their repros. Their existence screws up the market. |

Lot 2059 in the current REA is a great photo, as it puts a specific 1916 date on some Brooklyn Pennants we've discussed here. Very rare to be able to put a specific date on pennants this early. There just aren't many "pennant photos" like this to have survived.
My dumb new laptop won't allow me to copy/paste a link, but thought that many here would find the photo interesting. |

The photo was taken at game #1 of the 1916 World's Series at Braves Field; and, the woman on the far right is Mrs. Ed McKeever, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers--er, Robins--er, Superbas! And to Greg's point, this has to be the earliest Brooklyn pennant to feature the nickname, "Dodgers," thereon because most simply read "Brooklyn" from that era. Apparently, they stocked up on pennants before boarding their train to Boston because there's no less than 5 Brooklyn pennants depicted in the photo if you look carefully enough.

I was thrilled to pick this off of a recent eBay run of several different colleges, all in perfect condition. This one has a cool leather insignia. There is a large tag "manufactured by Burton-Dixie, Chicago, Ill." and a smaller tag "manufactured by Chicago Pennant Co., 6542 Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago, Illinois." Anyone have a guess on the vintage of the this beauty?

Here's something you don't see every day....A Keezer football pennant. I've owned this pennant for years and had no idea it was Keezer.

It's been a while since my last update but I've been slowly adding to the Pennant catalog. Here's the latest version in pdf form
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sPW...ew?usp=sharing I have about 12 more pages of this thread to go through and a some tidying up to do. But, as always, your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone who's shared photos and knowledge for this endeavor.
The top 10 teams rankings are as follows:

I found a nice copy of the elusive 1969 cloth Giants pennant on ETSY. I think I've bought 3 pennants on ETSY in 10 years of insomnia induced searching.

I don't think those are strings. Tassels look like that if they've been tied in a knot for many years.

Random, obscure, meaningless observation made to keep this thread from sinking …. Here’s a 1969 Trench Pilots pennant, we’ve all seen it before, but this has a MLB trademark like nothing I’ve seen on any other pennants …

While the museum used to be open to the public, it is now closed. I met Gary years ago when we both loaned items to the Dodger Stadium pop-up museum (he loaned over 95% of the items shown there and still loans items for exhibit in the stadium), and he graciously allows me to visit the museum from time to time. BTW, most of the pennants on exhibit are simply nailed to the walls. The Campy pennant pictured above is framed because it will be part of an exhibit Gary is putting together of Negro League players which will be on display at the Stadium. |
