I have one of these in my personal collection so I did not bid as high as I should have, but someone got a great deal on this signature from ebay last week!

Just got this puppy back from PSA - been waiting for one at a "decent" price for a long time.
The PSA population for Game 2 is 7 now. If anyone has access to their population report, can you tell me how many total stubs from the 1919 Series have been encaps by them, just curious. |

Here's a 1923 sidewritten Buck Weaver -- unfortunately I can't get a good photo of the sidewriting -- it's washed out by the flash -- I'm going to have to get someone who knows something about photography to shoot it for me.

Jeff, does that postcard designation mean it's from 1909? Just wondering since Weaver didn't make the majors till 1912.

actually I see what looks like 1912 on the card, but still curious as to the 1909 designation.

Max Stein postcards were released between 1909-1916. PSA just uses the original year of issue on the flips. Maybe they do this because they are not exactly sure what year these postcards were issued.

Hi everyone. New to the site. My name is Ed Gallagher. I saw this was where people were posting the Blacksox cards.
I just picked this up a week or so ago. I'm really not sure what it's worth but that's not why I got it. I just like the vintage stuff. I think it's a 1917 ? But that wouldn't make sense because the back says he has played from 1905-1920 so I don't really know. Anyway here's the card. Enjoy. Ed Last edited by alltimeball; 11-24-2010 at 05:55 PM. |

Picked up this circa 1940s-50s print of what is labeled the 1920 White Sox, but is the 1919 Sox. The presence of what appears to be Dave Danforth (3rd from left) and Frank Shellenback (6th from left) would date this picture to the 1919 season. While not labeled here is my identification:
L-R Kid Gleason, Lefty Williams, Dave Danforth, Eddie Collins, Joe Jenkins, Frank Shellenback, Dickie Kerr, Grover Lowdermilk, Ray Schalk, Eddie Cicotte, Reb Russell, Happy Felsch, Shano Collins, ?Chick Gandil?, Eddie Murphy, Fred McMullin, Swede Risberg, Joe Jackson, Hervey McClellan, Nemo Leibold, Buck Weaver, Byrd Lynn |

Aside from a few Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins, and Ray Schalk bats, there are not all that many Black Sox bats in the hobby. So, I offer this Reb Russell bat as a Black Sox piece. Reb's model seems to have been popular with other players: I believe that even after he retired other players would order his model, with his signature, for their own use. But this one is said to match his orders from H&B. True, Reb didn't contribute much to the Sox in 1919. He pitched to a couple of batters with poor results. But he did play for them in 1919!

I was too slow to land the Felsch and not interested in the "Lefty Williams" with the wrong picture (Hugh High). Great looking cards with the Collins-McCarthy Baseball's Hall of Fame backs. Was told they were cut from a sheet which is why the A grades (my picture does not do them justice)

Would like to see some folks' recent pickups...
I'm going to make a couple of posts in here this week after a few big pickups for me thanks to a net54 member Picked up my last Risberg card, 1916 Zeenut, to complete his 3 card checklist (I dont count the 1917-18 Team set as only one set is known to exist) It's not perfect obviously, a scrapbook removal with some staining and writing with trimmed down edges, but the image is great! ...Now ISO 1915 Zeenuts of Williams and Burns, and a nice low-mid level 1915 Cicotte Cracker Jack...and a W514 Jackson of course... |

Nice pickup Thomas, and good luck finding a nice 1915 Cicotte CJ. I got mine about 30 years ago but misplaced it for many years when we moved. Fortunately found it 3 years ago in an old briefcase along with some forgotten autographs.

Same damn thing happened to me! I had a nice raw one...probably about a 5 grade I bought about 20+ years ago... kept it in one of those thick screw down holders and it disappeared. Unfortunately I have never found it and have decided it must have been stolen by a college roommate

Agreed do not touch it up. It adds character and to me takes away from the piece if you "touch it up"
Great Post and Love all the Black Sox Pickups in this thread. (although I focus more on Joe Jackson then the rest)

Big thank you to Steve Smith for dealing and allowing me to cross off two HUGE names from my want list!
Hervey McClellan on a flat is near impossible due to a very early death in 1924 Tom McGuire a one game pitcher for the 1919 White Sox is also very hard to find The addition of these two gives me 22 of the 31 players who appeared in a game for the 1919 White Sox -I landed a Win Noyes signature in January...these three ultra rare signatures are the prizes of my collection now! Thank you Steve! Last edited by ThomasL; 03-10-2022 at 02:56 PM. |
