Which card(s) is considered his true "RC". I don't see much mention of the R312. Can someone give me some info on this set?

While I'm not 100% sure:

-some consider his zeenut card his rookie...or prookie because he's in the minor leagues
-some consider the 36 goudey to be his rookie,
-some publications call the 38' goudey his rookie

Is that clear! I'm sure someone will eventually chime in!

Peter is correct on all three. DiMaggio's first appearance on any baseball card was his Zeenut, but since he played in the PCL it is not considered his major league rookie.

The R312 is his first appearance as a member of the Yankees, but due to its size and paper stock not everyone considers it a baseball card.

His first appearance on a nationally distributed baseball card was 1938 Goudey.

And I didn't even participate on that other train wreck thread.

Thanks for the replies. Can someone further explain about the card stock of the R312? I absolutely love the look of the card, but have never seen one in person. There is a PSA 4 on ebay right now that I am interested in, but knowing nothing on pricing of this set I am having a tough time.

r312's have thin, paper like stock...prone to wrinkling...but many are in really nice shape. pricing????? look in the guide!

The R312's measure approximately 4 x 5 1/2 and have a blank back. You might consider buying an inexpensive one on eBay (they can be had for under $15) to get a feeling for what they look and feel like in person, before spending a bunch of money on a DiMaggio.

The R313 is the true RC, as this photo shows the Dag at St Pete wearing jersey #18 and prior to receiving his official rookie number(9). Mostly, I believe this to be the true rc, because I own it (:

Incidentally, Aren't the '38 Goudeys known throughout the hobby as a novelty anyways?

He is also in the 1936 World Wide Gum set (#51). The set was only distributed in Canada so many may not consider it to qualify for rookie card status (whatever that is). I would certainly rather have it than any of the 1936 Goudey issues but I am probably in the minority.

I'm with jdrum and would take the world wide if given first choice....in the end after realizing the money would never be there for that issue, I happily picked this one up as my type.
