So what are the more difficult cards in the set from your experience? I think I see fewer Mascots, Forbes Field and Dreyfuss's than the others....Here is my type I won from Doug Allen on ebay....and I think it was before he was with Mastro.....it was around 9 yrs ago and I got it raw for around $350...

This guy is a tough one. What kid would have saved Locke, Dreyfuss and the mascot? Even Forbes Field wouldn't be very thrilling to a kid. No wonder that these are the four toughest. For me, Dreyfuss was the toughest and last card found. And he wasn't a HOFer then.

You make a good point. With this set (according to the back of the cards) people were able to obtain the whole set in one shot.

But, which cards did people take care of over the years? Probably not the Mascot boy, Forbes, Locke and Dreyfuss which are the tougher examples to find today.

I personally think they're all tough. Especially when you compare them to other smaller candy and tobacco sets.

Being from Pittsburgh and having been out to the Forbes Field wall earlier today for the 48th Anniversary of Mazeroski's home run, I love this post!

For me Locke was not the hardest card out of the ones I have since I had two at one time as well as two of Gibson. Gibson looks like a friend of mine.

We have always enjoyed the Pittsburgh Tip Top Set

However we have found it quite difficult to secure ultra
high grade examples.

The current population reports present strong evidence
why the search for outstanding examples is so challenging

PSA has graded 168 examples -only 6 have achieved a grade of 6
with no 7's or 8's- remarkable to find a set which does not have a single
example in either of these grades

SGC has graded 366 cards - 8 have achieved a grade of 80 and only
3 example have been granted an 84.

We are fortunate to own some examples of the 17 high grade cards

In fact, the March 2008 Goodwin auction was the only event in the past 4
years when High Grade examples were sold on the public auction.
As we recall an SGC 84 of Flynn sold for over $11,500 and an SGC 80
example sold for $3600. Those are remarkably high prices for a type card
of which nearly 550 graded examples are available

About how many Dreyfuss cards actually exist ?

Barney Dreyfus, next to the Mascot and Forbes Field is the card
where the fewest number of total cards have been graded.

Four have been graded by PSA
Eleven have been graded by SGC

The highest graded card is an SGC 80

Our best guess is that there are probably as many ungraded Tip Tops
in the world as there are graded ones.

That would mean there are probably 500 to 600 ungraded cards

If that is the case the total ungraded population for Mr. Dreyfus is
likely to 10-20 examples.

In total, our best guess is that there are somewhere between 20 and 35
examples of Dreyfus- 15 of which have been documented by the grading
companies
