Tough cards from the M101-5 set and display options

I recently decided to piece together the M101-5 set. The B&W photography and great shots always caught my eye. I realize I may never fully complete the set (i.e. Jackson, Ruth, and Thorpe.) However, are there any other cards in particular that others have found to be unusually scarce? How difficult is the Cady?

As for display options, I would like to store the set in a binder. It seems to me that the tobacco size 15 pocket pages are a bit too small. Would standard 9 pocket pages be the best solution?

Maybe you've seen the article on M101-5/4 that Todd Schultz and I penned in the current Old Cardboard. If not I recommend it

As far as M101-5 rarities go, yes, Cady is an extremely difficult card in M101-5 (not in M101-4). Also Becker #12 and Wallace #186. Otherwise the rarities in the set seem to involve the back varieties.

One of the fun things about this set is the multiple ways you can collect it:

1. Obviously you can try for a complete set. As you noted, Ruth, Jackson, and Thorpe are serious roadblocks.

2. One of each M101-5 back variety. That will keep you busy for a while.

3. Collect all the M101-5 cards or poses not in M101-4. That is a fun little subset, which includes Thorpe as well as Armando Marsans, Frank Chance, Becker and Wallace. But it's something to aspire to--

4. Hall of Fame set (which doesn't include Thorpe or Jackson!), or a Black Sox set.

Concerning display options: I was quite frustrated that none of the American page manufacturers made anything appropriately sized for M101-4/5. Finally when I was in London a few years ago I went to a Saturday morning swap meet in a parking garage under the Charing Cross Road tube station, and bought an album and some pages designed for British cigarette cards. They fit M101-5/4 perfectly, ten cards to a page!

You can probably find this size of album and pages on ebay from a British tobacco card seller. Even if they don't advertise albums, if you wrote and asked about them I bet one would be able to supply an appropriate album.

Hey Jason, aren't you the one who was looking to assemble a Morehouse Baking set? You can still do that and limit it to m101-5 cards. Now that would be a set for the ages.

Tim covered the scarcities, and if the Lavan spelling error Lavin is ever confirmed (or is confirmed again, as I've not seen one but the guides tend to list it) you can add that too.

As for pockets, 10 per page would work sweet. I keep mine in individual holders; frankly, I mostly look at just scans anymore When I complete my master set in the year 2525, I'll worry about how I should display them best

Hi Todd,

A while ago I mentioned possibly assembling a Morehouse Baking Red Sox set. A full MB set is a bit much for me. As for my current endeavor, I won't be focusing on backs much. Mostly blank, with a few others mixed in (although I hope to acquire a few MB backs - my favorite.)

I've found that this set is fun to collect as a secondary set. There are stretches where none are available or the few that are are so high priced that it's not worth buying them (see the ebay "Buy it Now" listings). I've started and stopped and started a Famous & Barr set.

I've found that the Stengel and Wagner are also rarely seen as well as the ones you already mentioned.

Good Luck. Maybe I'll run into you at the Wilmington, MA show this fall. Last year there were almost no m101-4 or 5's there. Two years ago there was a few dozen of various backs.

Hi Scott,

Putting the set together is a secondary project for me, as my primary focus is Red Sox cards. I'm looking forward to a long assembly process.

Last year was the first time I attended the Wilmington show. What a great time - I was like a kid in a candy store. I plan on attending this year, so it would be great to meet a Net 54 member.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Stengel and Wagner cards.

Sisler, in M101-5, is not necessarily tough, but certainly spendy...and getting tougher to find.
