Mastro has a near set of these cards ending tonight. It is missing the Christy Mathewson for completion. Has anyone ever seen the Mathewson before? How many exist and what is the value? Could someone post a scan? Thanks, Tony. |

If I were a betting person I would bet lunch a Matty won't get posted. Personally I have never seen one but an example or two certainly might exist. One other thing....I don't think these are Derby Cigar cards...It's a hobby/urban myth perpetuated, imo....I would almost guarantee it. They are on paper thin stock and won't fit in a Derby pack (at least the type I have)...This excerpt below is from Lew Lipset's Encyclopedia, all 3 volumes, page 103....even he says it's not conclusive about their origin....but the hobby has made it so. I am not positive but I believe this is precisely where the myth started. Again, I don't think Lew started the myth it just kind of took off from here.... regards |
